Successful candidates will be recommended to advance to the student teaching<br />

practicum.<br />

Student teaching requirements include:<br />

1. Completion <strong>of</strong> 150 hours <strong>of</strong> departmentally approved service learning<br />

or equivalent school internship;<br />

2. Departmental approved Junior Review Portfolio;<br />

3. Completion <strong>of</strong> foundational and pedagogical courses (no grade below<br />

a C+);<br />

4. A 3.0 GPA in both content major, education, and overall;<br />

5. A 3.0 GPA in core foundation courses (EDUC 220, 304, and 320) and<br />

education program; and<br />

6. A written endorsement from department chair <strong>of</strong> content area.<br />

Recommendation for Certification to NYSED<br />

Upon successful fulfillment <strong>of</strong> the curricular and service learning requirements <strong>of</strong> the Teacher<br />

Education Program and passing scores on the teacher certification examinations required by<br />

New York State, students qualify to be recommended for Childhood (1 st -6 th grade), Middle<br />

Childhood (5 th -9 th grade), or Adolescence (7 th -12 th grade) Initial Certification. Reciprocity exists<br />

with many states. Students should check with specific state education departments with regard<br />

to certification requirements.<br />

Requirements: To qualify for Childhood, Middle Childhood, or Adolescence teacher<br />

certification through the <strong>Hartwick</strong> <strong>College</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Education, an individual must<br />

satisfactorily complete the following:<br />

1. Course requirements in approved academic major (and minor for Childhood level) with a<br />

cumulative GPA <strong>of</strong> 3.0<br />

2. Overall GPA <strong>of</strong> 3.0 or higher<br />

3. Curriculum XXI requirements<br />

4. Additional extra-departmental course requirement (vary by major and level)<br />

5. Log 150 hours <strong>of</strong> service learning or equivalent school internship—20 <strong>of</strong> these must be in<br />

special education<br />

6. Education course work with a cumulative GPA <strong>of</strong> 3.0 or above and no single grade below a<br />

C+<br />

7. Child Abuse Identification Seminar<br />

8. Substance Abuse Seminar<br />

9. Violence Prevention Seminar<br />

10. Passing NYSED battery <strong>of</strong> tests (see www.NYSED.gov for dates and details)<br />

• Liberal Arts and Science Test (LAST)<br />

• Assessment <strong>of</strong> Teaching Skills Test (written) (ATS)<br />

• Content Specialty Test<br />

New York State Regulation: Teacher certification programs at <strong>Hartwick</strong> <strong>College</strong><br />

are subject to the rules and regulations <strong>of</strong> the State Legislature, Commissioner <strong>of</strong><br />

Education, Board <strong>of</strong> Regents, and State Education Department <strong>of</strong> New York<br />

State. Institutional recommendation for certification is not guaranteed upon<br />

completion <strong>of</strong> the above courses without demonstrating competent teaching and<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essionalism in the field.<br />

Teacher education general information sessions are held frequently throughout<br />

the year. To attend one, or to receive more detailed information on your options<br />
