341, 344, 347 Literature courses taught in French (3 credits)<br />

These courses correspond to Fren 212, 215, 218. As with other courses for<br />

the major readings, papers and exams are in French. Each <strong>of</strong> these may be<br />

repeated for credit when <strong>of</strong>fered with a different topic. Taught in French.<br />

Prerequisite: Fren 202.<br />

341 Literary Movements (3 credits) An in-depth study <strong>of</strong> a particular<br />

movement, period or school in French literature. Possible topics: the<br />

Pléiade, the classical theatre, romanticism, realism and naturalism,<br />

symbolism, surrealism, existentialism, etc. Taught in French. May be<br />

repeated for credit. When repeated, this course bears the number 342,<br />

343. (MWE or MWL, depending on topic)<br />

344 Major Authors (3 credits) A study <strong>of</strong> representative works by one<br />

author: Rabelais, Montaigne, Racine, Molière, Voltaire, Diderot, Stendhal,<br />

Balzac, Flaubert, Zola, Gide, Claudel, Proust, Sartre, Camus, Beckett, etc.<br />

Taught in French. May be repeated for credit. When repeated, this course<br />

bears the numbers 345 or 346. (MWL)<br />

347 Themes or Genres (3 credits) A study <strong>of</strong> a recurrent theme or a<br />

specific genre. Possible topics are: Novels <strong>of</strong> Adventure and Imagination,<br />

Psychological Novels, Philosophical Tales, The Short Story, Selected<br />

Essayists, The Literature <strong>of</strong> Commitment, Exile and Alienation in 20 th<br />

Century Fiction, etc. Taught in French. May be repeated for credit. When<br />

repeated, this course bears the numbers 348 or 349. (MWL)<br />

348 Modern French Theatre (3 credits) This course will explore<br />

representative works in French theatre from the end <strong>of</strong> the 19th century,<br />

with an emphasis on the influence <strong>of</strong> avant-garde movements during the<br />

early 20 th century. Students will read works by Jarry, Artaud, Sartre,<br />

Ionesco, Beckett, Genet, and Arrabal. The course will emphasize skills in<br />

close reading and dramatic interpretation <strong>of</strong> plays. Students will write<br />

several short papers and perform selected scenes. Taught in French.<br />

400 Advanced Literary Studies (3 credits) A reading, discussion and<br />

literary analysis course for seniors and other highly qualified students.<br />

This course will focus on one or more authors, a topic or period. Taught in<br />

French. Prerequisites: French 321 and 322. Offered on an occasional<br />

basis. (MWL)<br />

485 French Term Abroad (4 credits) The French term abroad is<br />

usually <strong>of</strong>fered on alternate years during January Term.<br />

490 Senior Project (3 credits) Required <strong>of</strong> all majors. A thesis or other<br />

appropriate work which demonstrates the student’s pr<strong>of</strong>iciency in French.<br />
