230 Introduction to Computer Technology in Music (3 credits)<br />

This course is <strong>of</strong>fered as an introduction to the fundamentals <strong>of</strong> computer<br />

technology and music as it relates to the needs <strong>of</strong> the pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

musician/educator. Students will be introduced to the fundamentals <strong>of</strong><br />

musical acoustics; the ability to use pr<strong>of</strong>essional level music notation,<br />

music sequencing, and digital audio s<strong>of</strong>tware; a technical understanding<br />

<strong>of</strong> MIDI, MIDI s<strong>of</strong>tware and hardware; Web page design; and digital<br />

recording and sound editing. The class will progress through a series <strong>of</strong><br />

exercises and projects that are designed to explore, apply, and expand<br />

upon many <strong>of</strong> the concepts and issues described above. Individual and<br />

group instruction will be provided for all exercises and projects.<br />

Prerequisite: the ability to read music. (CPA) or (MLC)<br />

232 Fundamentals <strong>of</strong> Sound Recording (3 credits) Provides an<br />

introduction to the techniques <strong>of</strong> studio sound and music recording.<br />

Topics include: acoustics and psychoacoustics; concepts and terminology<br />

relating to sound recording; the recording <strong>of</strong> the voice (both spoken and<br />

sung), instrumental music, and “environmental” sound; sound editing;<br />

microphone techniques; control board operation; as well as the “handson”<br />

experience <strong>of</strong> supervising a recording session from start to finish. The<br />

class culminates in the production <strong>of</strong> a CD, representing the projects<br />

successfully completed during the course <strong>of</strong> the term.<br />

240 Music Theory III (3 credits) A continuation <strong>of</strong> work completed in<br />

the first year <strong>of</strong> Music Theory. The material includes chromaticism, more<br />

advanced elements in part writing, analysis, and melodic harmonization,<br />

large-scale formal structures, secondary functions, augmented sixths<br />

chords, modulation, and individual and group projects that focus on<br />

expanded analytical and compositional activities. Prerequisite: Musi 142.<br />

(CPA)<br />

241 Aural Skills III (2 credits) Increase in the demands <strong>of</strong> aural acuity<br />

in identifying intervals and triads, in particular, as applied to sight<br />

singing, 2-voice dictation and chord progressions that will add I6/4, II6,<br />

V, V/V, V7/IV; open score Bach chorales are used to strengthen interval<br />

and clef study, including the tenor clef; rhythm exercise covers aural and<br />

notation aspects <strong>of</strong> divisions <strong>of</strong> 5 and 7 to a beat in simple and compound<br />

time. Prerequisite: Musi 143. (CPA)<br />

242 Music Theory IV (3 credits) This course primarily concentrates on the<br />

music <strong>of</strong> the 20th century. It begins with an introduction to late 19th century<br />

harmonic practices, and then turns its full attention to the rich and broad array <strong>of</strong><br />

analytical and compositional features found in 20 th century music. Analytical and<br />

compositional projects, undertaken in individual and small student groups, are<br />

structured toward various 20 th century music practices. Prerequisite: Musi 240.<br />

(CPA)<br />

243 Aural Skills IV (2 credits) Reinforcement <strong>of</strong> previous materials<br />

with the addition <strong>of</strong> compound intervals; 4-voice triads; chord<br />

progressions including IV6 and inversions <strong>of</strong> V9; playing one voice and<br />

singing another voice simultaneously from open score Bach chorales.<br />

Prerequisite: Musi 241. (CPA)<br />
