Letterpress<br />
Letterpress students learn the basics <strong>of</strong> typography, typesetting, page<br />
design, book design, and the operation <strong>of</strong> two presses. Students also learn<br />
the various forms <strong>of</strong> illustration that are compatible with letterpress work.<br />
Past projects designed by students include books <strong>of</strong> original poetry, short<br />
stories and graphics. Other ephemeral projects include work on posters,<br />
calendars, invitations, portfolios and a wide variety <strong>of</strong> smaller printed<br />
items. Letterpress has no prerequisite.<br />
Art and Art History<br />
Requirements for the major in art: Minimum <strong>of</strong> 51 credits,<br />
distributed as follows:<br />
Five core courses in art:<br />
113 Drawing I<br />
114 Drawing II<br />
115 2-D Design<br />
165 3-D Design<br />
212 Drawing/The Figure or<br />
217 Drawing/Works on Paper<br />
Three core courses in art history (to be taken in the first two years):<br />
102 World Art History I: Ancient Art<br />
103 World Art History II: Middle Periods (10th -17th Century)<br />
104 World Art History III: Art <strong>of</strong> the Modern World<br />
Two courses in art history above the 100 level.<br />
It is required that one course be 306 20 th Century Art History<br />
or 402 Art: 1945 to Present.<br />
Two courses in same studio area: at 200 and 300 level<br />
Three courses in another studio area at 200, 300, and 400 level.<br />
Upper-level occasionally done by directed study.<br />
Junior Review (not a course, but an assessment)<br />
490 Senior Project in Art: Junior Review must be successfully<br />
completed before beginning the senior project.<br />
Requirements for the major in art history: Minimum <strong>of</strong> 39 credits,<br />
distributed as follows:<br />
Three core courses in art history (to be taken in the first year):<br />
102, 103, 104 Art History I, II, III<br />
Two courses in studio art, selected from:<br />
113: Drawing I<br />
114: Drawing II<br />
115: 2-D Design<br />
165: 3-D Design or other studio courses for which there is no prerequisite for<br />
which prerequisite is fulfilled or by permission <strong>of</strong> instructor.<br />
Six additional art history courses, distributed as follows:<br />
Two courses selected from:<br />
301 Greek & Roman Art History<br />
302 Medieval Art History<br />
303 Italian Renaissance Art History<br />
