264 Music History I: Early Music (3 credits) (Antiquity, Medieval,<br />
Renaissance, and early Baroque music ca. 500 B.C.-1700 A.D.) Explores the<br />
origins and early development <strong>of</strong> the Western art tradition. The role <strong>of</strong> the church<br />
in the development <strong>of</strong> musical genres and styles, the origins and flowering <strong>of</strong><br />
secular vocal forms, musical notation and criticism, and the impact <strong>of</strong><br />
Renaissance religious reforms on music are among topics explored. Primarily for<br />
music majors but interested students who read music may enroll with instructor’s<br />
approval. Prerequisite: Musi 140. (CPA)<br />
265 Music History II: The Common Practice Period (3 credits)<br />
(Late Baroque, Classical, and Romanticism ca. 1700-1870) The<br />
development <strong>of</strong> large-scale vocal and instrumental works; the role <strong>of</strong><br />
patronage and public concert life in music making; the lives and<br />
contributions <strong>of</strong> major composers such as J.S. Bach, G.F. Haydn, W.A.<br />
Mozart, and Ludwig von Beethoven; and the connections between literary<br />
movements (e.g. Romanticism) and music are among topics explored.<br />
Primarily for music majors but interested students who read music may<br />
enroll with instructor’s approval. Prerequisite: Musi 264. (CPA)<br />
280 Music <strong>of</strong> the World’s Cultures (3 credits) Study <strong>of</strong> music outside<br />
<strong>of</strong> the Western art tradition as both cultural and artistic phenomena.<br />
Principles <strong>of</strong> ethnomusicology will be employed within an<br />
interdisciplinary framework. Music cultures explored will include Africa,<br />
North and South America, the Middle East, Indonesia, and the Far East.<br />
Open to music and non-music majors. (NTW) or (CPA)<br />
295 Sophomore Internship in Music (3 credits) An internship in a<br />
music-related field.<br />
310 Music <strong>of</strong> the Rom (Gypsies) (INTR) (3 credits) Explores the origins and<br />
dissemination <strong>of</strong> Romani music and culture through the Middle and Near East,<br />
Eastern and Western Europe, and the British Isles. The appropriation <strong>of</strong> Western<br />
classical composers and popular culture <strong>of</strong> the “Gypsy” idiom are examined as<br />
well. Questions <strong>of</strong> identity, insider/outsider musics, persecutions <strong>of</strong> Rom, and<br />
advocacy efforts on their behalf are integral to the course. Prior knowledge <strong>of</strong><br />
music helpful but not necessary. (CIS)<br />
320 Conducting I: Choral (3 credits) A practical study <strong>of</strong> choral<br />
conducting through class lecture, the conducting experience, and the<br />
study <strong>of</strong> vocal technique. (CPA)<br />
322 Conducting II: Instrumental (3 credits) A practical study <strong>of</strong> the<br />
instrumental score and basic rehearsal/conducting techniques, class<br />
lecture and conducting experience with a lab band.(CPA)<br />
323 Acting with Your Singing Voice (3 credits) An opportunity for<br />
students to prepare vocal literature for performance through an<br />
understanding <strong>of</strong> the drama imbued in the words and music. Emphasis on<br />
theatrical expression within a variety <strong>of</strong> musical styles, from chamber to<br />
full stage works.<br />
324 Foreign Language Diction for Singing (3 credits) Covers<br />
English, Italian, French, German, and Latin diction and song literature.<br />
The rules governing the correct pronunciation <strong>of</strong> each language and the<br />
International Phonetic Alphabet are covered as are their application to<br />
vocal literature. This course can fulfill the requirement for B.A. vocal<br />
majors and is recommended for other music majors. Students wishing to<br />
enroll must be able to read music. Offered every other fall.<br />
