Teaching Practicum (Fall/Spring Terms) Prerequisites: Educ 220, 304, 320,<br />

3XX (Specialty Teaching Methods), and 380 (12 credits, required)<br />

490 Childhood Level Observation and Supervised Teaching<br />

Seven weeks in grades 1-3, and seven weeks in grades 4-6.<br />

491 Middle Childhood Observation and Supervised Teaching.<br />

Seven weeks in grades 5-7, and seven weeks in grades 7-9.<br />

492 Adolescence Level Observation and Supervised Teaching.<br />

Seven weeks in grades 7-9, and seven weeks in grades 10-12.<br />

Music Students:<br />

290 Mini Practicum (MUSIC EDUCATION STUDENTS ONLY, 3 credits,<br />

required). This course introduces music education students to the practicum<br />

experience. Students are placed in traditional educational settings and are required to<br />

observe, interact, supervise and or teach for a minimum <strong>of</strong> 20 school days (120 hours).<br />

The course fulfills one <strong>of</strong> the three level placements (elementary, middle, or high school)<br />

and also fulfills one <strong>of</strong> the two (instrumental/vocal) music specific area requirements<br />

required for music education students.<br />

390 Multicultural/Urban Educational Experience-Mini Practicum (3 credits,<br />

required). The course places students in non-traditional educational settings from<br />

diverse cultural, socioeconomic, and geographic backgrounds. Students are required to<br />

observe, interact, supervise and/or teach for a minimum <strong>of</strong> 20 school days (120 hours).<br />

Readings on diversity, multicultural music education, and the sociological dimensions <strong>of</strong><br />

schools, students, and teachers, provide a formal context for reflecting on the field<br />

experience. Music education students will also examine culturally specific music learning<br />

practices, and the importance <strong>of</strong> social context to music. Requires writing a brief<br />

proposal and approval by the Education Committee. Internship may be during summer,<br />

January Term or Fall/Spring Terms. Prerequisite: Educ 320.<br />
