This degree allows students to specialize within the broader context <strong>of</strong> a<br />

liberal arts and sciences education. It also prepares students for graduate<br />

work in music as well as affiliated careers in music.<br />

Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Science (B.S.)<br />

The major in music education is an intensive and rigorous pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

program that fosters individual growth. Curricular emphasis is placed on<br />

critical thinking and creativity, and students gain competency in vocal,<br />

instrumental, and general music, K-12. Student teaching placements take<br />

place in the sophomore, junior, and senior years.<br />

In addition to core courses in music and music education, students must<br />

demonstrate keyboard and guitar pr<strong>of</strong>iciency by the end <strong>of</strong> the sophomore<br />

year. Education courses required for teacher certification are: Educ 220:<br />

Psychological Foundations <strong>of</strong> Education, Educ 304: Social and<br />

Philosophical Foundations <strong>of</strong> Education; Educ320: Interdisciplinary<br />

Curriculum and Instruction; Educ 372: Substance Abuse and the<br />

Classroom; and Child Abuse Identification Seminar. As part <strong>of</strong> the<br />

sophomore review, students are required to take part in a three-step<br />

interview process with the education faculty.<br />

Students are required to complete the NYSED battery <strong>of</strong> tests in order to<br />

be recommended for teacher certification. These include the Liberal Arts<br />

and Science Test (LAST), Assessment <strong>of</strong> Teaching Skills Test (ATS), and<br />

Content Specialty Test.<br />

Note: Because <strong>of</strong> the great overlap in requirements for the music<br />

education and music majors, no student may be credited with both<br />

majors.<br />

Affiliations and Memberships<br />

The Department <strong>of</strong> Music is accredited by the National Association <strong>of</strong><br />

Schools <strong>of</strong> Music (NASM) and is a member <strong>of</strong> the national music honor<br />

society, Pi Kappa Lambda.<br />

Student organizations include: MENC, for music Educators, and two<br />

music fraternities, Sigma Alpha Iota, for women and Phi Mu Alpha, for<br />

men.<br />
