230 Theatre Workshop (3 credits) Preparation <strong>of</strong> dramatic readings <strong>of</strong><br />

French plays. Principles <strong>of</strong> French pronunciation and speech are applied<br />

in rehearsal <strong>of</strong> the plays. Discussion <strong>of</strong> selected examples from such<br />

dramatists as Anouilh, Cocteau, Camus, Ionesco, Montherlant, Molière,<br />

etc. Required listenings <strong>of</strong> recorded plays. Taught in French.<br />

Prerequisites: Fren 202 or permission <strong>of</strong> the instructor. Offered on an<br />

occasional basis.<br />

231 Oral Interpretation <strong>of</strong> Poetry (3 credits) The understanding <strong>of</strong><br />

poetry involves an appreciation <strong>of</strong> its sounds and rhythms. Introduction<br />

to French versification, oral drills, the interpretative recitation <strong>of</strong> several<br />

major French poems. Taught in French. Tapes, recordings, language<br />

laboratory. Prerequisite: Fren 202 or permission <strong>of</strong> the instructor.<br />

235 French for Business (3 credits) A study <strong>of</strong> French business<br />

practices, commercial writing and terminology. Readings, videos and<br />

class discussion will address French commerce and business etiquette,<br />

France’s role in the European Union and its attempts to face future<br />

economic challenges. Taught in French. Prerequisite: Fren 202 or<br />

permission <strong>of</strong> the instructor. Offered on an occasional basis.<br />

240 Readings in French (3 credits) Readings from various fields in<br />

order to increase reading comprehension. The distinctive construction<br />

and tenses <strong>of</strong> written French will be studied. Taught in French.<br />

Prerequisites: Fren 201, 202. Offered on an occasional basis.<br />

241 Composition and Grammar Review (3 credits) Practice in the<br />

writing <strong>of</strong> French on a broad range <strong>of</strong> assigned subjects and open-ended<br />

research topics. Particular attention is given to verb tenses. Items to be<br />

reviewed will emerge from the needs <strong>of</strong> the class. Taught in French.<br />

Prerequisites: Fren 201, 202. Offered on an occasional basis.<br />

242 Pronunciation and Phonetics (3 credits) Study <strong>of</strong> the phonetic<br />

properties <strong>of</strong> the French sound system. Drills and practice. Correction <strong>of</strong><br />

pronunciation problems. Language laboratory. Taught in French.<br />

Prerequisite: Fren 201 or 202. Offered on an occasional basis.<br />

285 French Term Abroad (4 credits) The French term abroad is<br />

usually <strong>of</strong>fered on alternate years during January Term. 302 Francophone<br />

Cultural Analysis (2 credits) French-language section accompanying<br />

Language 301: Introduction to Cultural Analysis. Required for majors and<br />

minors.<br />

315 Translation Workshop (3 credits) Grammatical and stylistic<br />

problems involved in translating passages from French into English and<br />

from English into French. Short, stylistically varied written selections and<br />

some work with audiovisual material. Taught in French. Prerequisites:<br />

Fren 202 or permission <strong>of</strong> instructor. Offered on an occasional basis.<br />

321, 322 Survey <strong>of</strong> French Literature (3 credits) A chronological<br />

introduction to the major authors, movements, genres and themes in<br />

French literature. Taught in French. These courses should, if possible, be<br />

taken in sequence. Prerequisite: Fren 202.<br />
