At least three 300/400-level courses must be part <strong>of</strong> a four-course<br />

literature concentration designed by the student and approved by the<br />

department no later than spring <strong>of</strong> the junior year. A concentration<br />

may be in a single literary genre, an historical period, a topic, an<br />

author or combination <strong>of</strong> authors, or in cultural studies. One <strong>of</strong> the<br />

four courses may be a creative writing course or a relevant course<br />

from another department. Senior seminars and directed studies,<br />

exclusive <strong>of</strong> the Senior Project, may count if appropriate, as may the<br />

before-1800 courses at the 300/400 level required above.<br />

490 Senior Project<br />

One <strong>of</strong> the 300/400-level courses must be an Approaches (A) course.<br />

The balance <strong>of</strong> the 12 required courses may be literature<br />

courses at any level. One creative writing course is allowed, but<br />

expository writing and public speaking courses are not.<br />

Grades for all courses taken in English above 111 are used to calculate<br />

the average in the major for Departmental Distinction.<br />

Requirements for the major with a concentration in creative<br />

writing: Minimum <strong>of</strong> 13 courses, nine in literature, four in creative<br />

writing, distributed as follows:<br />

Two courses at the 200 level:<br />

230 British Literature: Beginnings to 18 th Century<br />

240 American Literature: Beginnings to the Civil War<br />

Nine courses at the 300/400 level, distributed as follows:<br />

Two courses in literature before 1800, selected from the list above<br />

At least three 300/400-level courses must be part <strong>of</strong> a four-course<br />

creative writing concentration designed by the student and approved<br />

by the department no later than spring <strong>of</strong> the junior year.<br />

450 Seminar in Selected Topics<br />

490 Senior Project—may be either in creative writing or in literature<br />

One <strong>of</strong> the above 300/400-level courses must be an Approaches (A)<br />

course.<br />

The balance <strong>of</strong> the 13 required courses must be literature<br />

courses at any level.<br />

Requirements for the major with an emphasis in writing: 16<br />

courses, distributed as follows:<br />

Eleven courses distributed in the same fashion as those for the major<br />

with a concentration in literature<br />
