222 Scientific German (3 credits) This course deals with basic<br />

readings in the various natural sciences. A reading knowledge and the<br />

ability to translate original articles are emphasized. The basic vocabulary<br />

<strong>of</strong> each discipline will be treated, and each student is expected to complete<br />

a translation <strong>of</strong> an original work <strong>of</strong> about five pages in his or her science.<br />

Prerequisite: Germ 214. Offered alternate years.<br />

235 German for Commerce (3 credits) This course deals with<br />

readings in the commercial writings in the German language. Practice in<br />

writing business documents in German as well as basic conversation will<br />

be undertaken. Particular attention will be given to the esoteric<br />

vocabulary <strong>of</strong> commerce. Prerequisite: Germ 214. Offered alternate years.<br />

260 The German Novel in Translation (3 credits) This course treats<br />

major works <strong>of</strong> the German novel in translation such as works by<br />

Grimmelshousen, Novalis, Stifter, Mann, Kirst, Remarque, Boll, Grass,<br />

Hesse. Particular attention is given to the concept <strong>of</strong> the Bildungsroman.<br />

Taught in English. No prerequisite. Offered alternate years. (MWL)<br />

261 The Oral Narrative in Germany (3 credits) This course is a<br />

treatment <strong>of</strong> the folktales and legends in German-speaking lands. Primary<br />

emphasis is given to the work <strong>of</strong> the Brothers Grimm and the theories <strong>of</strong><br />

the origin <strong>of</strong> the Marchen. The regional role <strong>of</strong> the legend and its<br />

historical significance will also be discussed. Taught in English. No<br />

prerequisite. Offered alternate years.<br />

285 German Term Abroad in Vienna (4 credits) This is the on-site<br />

experience <strong>of</strong> German culture for students who have not yet participated<br />

in a <strong>Hartwick</strong> German program. Various places <strong>of</strong> interest will be visited<br />

and discussed in conjunction with a classroom program. Integration into<br />

Austrian life through living with families is an important feature. Offered<br />

in English and German. Prerequisite: Germ 214 or 160. Offered alternate<br />

years.<br />

302 Germanic Cultural Analysis (2 credits) German-language<br />

section <strong>of</strong> Language 301: Introduction to Cultural Analysis. Required for<br />

majors and minors.<br />

305 Phonetics and Conversation (3 credits) Conversational practice<br />

at an advanced level. Complex spoken patterns are practiced with<br />

emphasis put on the student’s ability to express himself in a variety <strong>of</strong><br />

situations. Included also is an introduction to the phonetic structure <strong>of</strong><br />

the German language. Taught in German. Prerequisite: Germ 215 or its<br />

equivalent. Offered alternate years.<br />

306 Composition and Grammar Review (3 credits) Through a series<br />

<strong>of</strong> compositions, the student is given practice in written German on an<br />

advanced level. Classroom discussions will also be concerned with various<br />

aspects <strong>of</strong> German grammar with attention not only to the basics but also<br />

the various nuances <strong>of</strong> the language. Taught in German. Required <strong>of</strong><br />

majors seeking teacher certification. Prerequisite: Germ 215 or its<br />

equivalent.<br />

360 Medieval and Baroque Literature (3 credits) A treatment <strong>of</strong> the<br />

major works <strong>of</strong> the Medieval and Baroque periods treating the chivalric<br />

lyrics and the various Baroque phenomena. Excerpts from such works as<br />

Das Nibelungenlied, Parzival, Simplicissimus will also be treated. Taught<br />

in German. Required <strong>of</strong> German majors. Prerequisite: Germ 220. Offered<br />
