process as it relates to the assessment of organizational systems and the care of groups of patients with complex, multiple systems disorders encountered in acute care settings. The clinical experience takes place in the hospital setting where students gain skills in the management of groups of patients, develop skills in providing leadership of health care personnel and demonstrate application of the nursing process as it relates to decision-making in the care of acutely ill clients. Prerequisites: Nurs 334 or permission of faculty. Offered spring semester. 490 Nursing Senior Theory Seminar/Senior Thesis (3 credits) provides a forum for collegial support for senior students as they develop their senior thesis. The thesis provides senior students with the opportunity to analyze a concept/phenomenon of concern to nursing as a means for guiding nursing practice. The thesis is a project of substantial scope which demonstrates the students’ ability to integrate theory, research, and practice. Synthesis of the understanding of this relationship will form the basis of the fourth chapter of the thesis. Alternately, RN students who have completed Nursing Research with a grade of B or better may choose to participate in the hands-on conduct of a nursing research study. Prerequisites: Nurs 448, Math 108, Nurs 261 (RNs only) and attainment of Writing Level 3. Offered fall semester. 491 Thesis Presentation (1 credit) provides a seminar setting in which students prepare for the public presentation of their theses. Prerequisite: Nurs 490. Offered spring semester. 495 Nursing Senior Internship (3 credits) provides the opportunity for the student to individually develop and implement a study program in an area of specialized interest in nursing and assists the student in the transition from academe to the realities of professional practice. This four week, independent, internship is planned in collaboration with a faculty member and an on-site supervisor. Prerequisite: One senior level theory and practicum nursing course. Offered J Term. Interdisciplinary Courses Intr 150 Life’s Choices: Ethical Issues in Healthcare (3 credits) Introduces students to a wide array of ethical dilemmas from multiple perspectives. Issues to be investigated during the course will be decided upon by the students, but may include autonomy, euthanasia, resource allocation, abortion, smoking, transplants, and cloning. Finances, laws, policies, patient and family beliefs (cultural and spiritual) will be explored related to their effect on the ethical decision-making process. Offered J-Term. (FYS) Intr 310 Health, Illness and Healing as Reflected through Film (3 credits) allows the student to explore various theories and content related to health, illness, and healing. A variety of theoretical approaches will be examined through readings, discussion, and film. Experiences, as depicted through film (Wit, Philadelphia, A Beautiful Mind) and readings will be analyzed through application of theory and factual content. Various aspects such as culture, economics, values, gender, race, psychological impact, social impact, and ethics will be examined in the context of application to past and present times. Through examination of specific health and illness topics, the student will develop a greater understanding of health/disease entities and demonstrate an appreciation for the multiple components that influence health, illness and healing.
