203 Advanced Intermediate Spanish (3 credits) This course is a<br />

prerequisite for all students who want to continue with more advanced<br />

Spanish courses such as Communicative Spanish, Advanced Spanish<br />

Grammar, and literature courses. Selected readings, conversations,<br />

discussions, compositions to further improve language, oral and written<br />

skills, etc. Except when prevented by extraordinary circumstances, Span<br />

203 should be taken in the semester immediately following Span 202.<br />

Prerequisites: Span 202, and students with a high level <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>iciency in<br />

Spanish with Spanish department faculty approval and/or placement test.<br />

205 Communicative Spanish (3 credits) Designed to enhance fluency<br />

in the language with emphasis on the four skills: reading, writing,<br />

speaking, and listening. Emphasis will be placed on vocabulary building,<br />

the use <strong>of</strong> idiomatic expressions, correct pronunciation and intonation,<br />

grammar review, and assignments to improve correct usage <strong>of</strong> written<br />

Spanish. Taught in Spanish. Prerequisite: Span 202 or permission <strong>of</strong><br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essor.<br />

240 Spanish for Healthcare Personnel (3 credits) A course and<br />

materials designed to bridge the communication gap between the large<br />

Spanish-speaking population and English-speaking healthcare team that<br />

treats them. This course focuses upon developing the oral skills <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Spanish language, as well as vocabulary related to health-related fields.<br />

Except when prevented by extraordinary circumstances, this course<br />

should be taken in the semester immediately following Span 102. Taught<br />

in Spanish. Prerequisite: Span 102, and students who have had three or<br />

more years <strong>of</strong> Spanish in high school with Spanish department faculty<br />

approval and/or placement test.<br />

246 Latin American Cultural Studies (3 credits) A course primarily<br />

for the non-speaker <strong>of</strong> Spanish who would like to study all aspects <strong>of</strong> Latin<br />

American culture (literature, culture, politics, etc.). A single author, a<br />

genre, a particular theme, or a time period might be studied. This course<br />

may be taken more than once if the topic is different. This course will<br />

count toward the Spanish major or minor as long as the student<br />

completes all readings and assignments in Spanish. (MWL) (NTW)<br />

247 Cultural Studies-Spain (3 credits) A course primarily for the nonspeaker<br />

<strong>of</strong> Spanish who would like to study all aspects <strong>of</strong> Spanish culture<br />

(literature, culture, politics, etc.). A single author, a genre, a particular<br />

theme or a time period might be studied. This course may be taken more<br />

than once if the topic is different. This course will also count toward the<br />

Spanish major or minor as long as the student completes all readings and<br />

assignments in Spanish.<br />

250, 350, 450 Seminar in Hispanic Studies (3 credits) A seminar in<br />

a selected topic <strong>of</strong> Spanish language, literature, or civilization.<br />

Occasionally the course is taught in English.<br />

285/485 Spanish Term Abroad (4 credits) A study abroad program<br />

<strong>of</strong>fered by the Spanish section <strong>of</strong> the language department.<br />

300 Advanced Conversation and Composition (3 credits) Intensive<br />

study <strong>of</strong> the Spanish language; students will be required to do weekly<br />

compositions. This course will train the student in public speaking<br />

through participation in talks for special occasions, debates, panel<br />

discussions, extemporaneous speaking, and other forms <strong>of</strong> public address.<br />

An advanced knowledge <strong>of</strong> written and spoken Spanish will be necessary<br />
