450 Topics in Art (3 or 4 credits depending on the course.) The topic <strong>of</strong><br />
this advanced seminar is announced prior to registration. Previous<br />
courses included “Advanced Foundry,” “Impressionism,” and “American<br />
Art.” Offered occasionally. Prerequisites depend on topic. Permission<br />
required. Please see schedule for current <strong>of</strong>ferings.<br />
461 Sculpture III (4 credits) The course is designed to broaden the<br />
advanced art students’ knowledge <strong>of</strong> three-dimensional aesthetic<br />
concepts, materials and techniques. Students concentrate on refining<br />
individual attitudes through involvement with sculptural form and<br />
process. In class, students explore current issues and trends through art<br />
periodicals and field trips. Completed projects are expected to exhibit<br />
high-quality workmanship and pr<strong>of</strong>ound treatment <strong>of</strong> aesthetic issues.<br />
Can be repeated as Sculpture IV. Prerequisites: Art 361.<br />
471 Ceramics III (4 credits) Clay as an art medium for both pottery and<br />
sculpture is explored by students on an advanced level. Students may<br />
learn basic glaze calculation in order to formulate their own glazes.<br />
Personal, creative ideas are realized in individual projects. Instruction<br />
emphasizes individual concerns. Students participate in all levels <strong>of</strong> kiln<br />
firing and studio maintenance. Can be repeated as Ceramics IV.<br />
476 Glass III (4 credits) Students explore glass as a medium on its own<br />
as well as in sculptural combinations at an advanced level. Emphasis is<br />
placed on developing personal artistic expression. Students should assist<br />
with equipment and studio maintenance. Prerequisite: Glass II and<br />
permission <strong>of</strong> instructor.<br />
490 Art History Research and Methods: Senior Thesis (4 credits)<br />
The seminar is designed to improve the art history major’s critical,<br />
analytical, writing and research skills. Stress is placed on development <strong>of</strong><br />
library skills, analysis <strong>of</strong> visual and written material, and the study <strong>of</strong> art<br />
history as a discipline. Students are introduced to the history <strong>of</strong> art history<br />
by studying how the various methods <strong>of</strong> and approaches to art history<br />
were invented, developed or adopted. The course is mandatory for all art<br />
history majors and includes the senior thesis in art history. However, nonart<br />
history majors who are interested may take the topics course The<br />
History <strong>of</strong> Art History, which is <strong>of</strong>fered concurrently. Non-majors will not<br />
be expected to do a senior thesis. The course will be taken for 4 credits—<br />
two will be earned in Fall Term and two in Spring Term. The course<br />
culminates with the presentation <strong>of</strong> the senior thesis in the spring term.<br />
Prerequisites: Art 102, 103, 104, and at least one additional art history<br />
course at the 300 level.<br />
490 Senior Project in Art: The Senior Project (4 credits) required<br />
<strong>of</strong> all studio art majors, represents a culmination <strong>of</strong> the student’s studies.<br />
A proposal conceived and written in consultation with the student’s<br />
academic advisor and two project advisors, must be reviewed by the entire<br />
department before work is begun on the project. An exhibition <strong>of</strong> the<br />
completed studio work is presented in the late spring at the Senior<br />
Projects Exhibition in Foreman Gallery. Questions about developing a<br />
Senior Project should be directed to the student’s advisor. Prerequisite:<br />
Successful completion <strong>of</strong> Junior Review.<br />
495 Senior Internship in Art or Art History (credit variable<br />
probably 3 or 4 credits) An internship in an art- related field. The student<br />
