expand strategies and skills development necessary to tackle advanced texts<br />

(visual and print) and higher-order thinking skills. Objectives <strong>of</strong> the course<br />

include examining authentic situations and/or events <strong>of</strong> significance to humans’<br />

and students’ lives that place all literacy into relevant contexts; continuing to<br />

develop self-motivated and lifelong learners; <strong>of</strong>fering equal opportunities to build<br />

upon students’ analytical, evaluative, reading, and writing skills; identifying the<br />

implications and critical roles literacies play in understanding social relations<br />

and organizations; using literacy to promote social justice. Each semester that the<br />

course is <strong>of</strong>fered, topics <strong>of</strong> study can be modified or changed. Prerequisite: Educ<br />

320 and acceptance into Teacher Education Program.<br />

EDUC 371 Teaching Students with Special Needs (2 credits, required )<br />

This course will examine the history and philosophy <strong>of</strong> special education in<br />

American schools. Special attention will be given to examining the legal<br />

implications <strong>of</strong> special education and students will develop a working knowledge<br />

<strong>of</strong> a variety <strong>of</strong> disabilities and the support service provided on an IEP. Students<br />

will learn various methods <strong>of</strong> teaching students with special needs. Prerequisite:<br />

Educ 320 and acceptance into Teacher Education Program.<br />

372 Educational Lyceum Series (2 credits, required). The Lyceum consists <strong>of</strong><br />

three mini-courses which are required for certification in New York State:<br />

Substance Abuse Mini-course, Violence Prevention Mini-course,<br />

Child Abuse Mini-course. Prerequisite: Educ 320 and acceptance into<br />

Teacher Education Program.<br />

380 Creating a Positive Learning Environment (3 credits, elective)<br />

This course examines philosophies and methods for creating a healthy learning<br />

environment. Issues such as child-abuse, apathy, self-discipline and self-concept,<br />

motivation, violence prevention, power struggles, rebellion, and challenges <strong>of</strong><br />

diverse student populations, are examined from developmental, multicultural,<br />

humanistic perspectives. Prerequisite: Educ 320 and acceptance into Teacher<br />

Education Program.<br />

382 Educational Technology (2 credits, required) The course explores the<br />

diversity <strong>of</strong> s<strong>of</strong>tware and hardware available to teachers for enhancing instruction<br />

and facilitating course administration. Students learn to use a variety <strong>of</strong> s<strong>of</strong>tware<br />

to produce instructional materials, develop multimedia presentations, and<br />

facilitate administrative duties. Students become familiar with the use <strong>of</strong> graphic<br />

and presentation (Photoshop, PowerPoint), spreadsheet (Excel), database<br />

(Access) s<strong>of</strong>tware, and educational s<strong>of</strong>tware pertinent to their content specialty.<br />

This course is linked to Educ 381 (Assessment and Evaluation). Prerequisite:<br />

Educ 320 and acceptance into Teacher Education Program.<br />

390 Multicultural/Urban/Alternative Minipracticum (3 credits,<br />

required) The course places students in non-traditional educational settings with<br />

students from diverse cultural, socioeconomic and geographic backgrounds.<br />

Students are required to observe, interact, supervise and/or teach for a minimum<br />

<strong>of</strong> 20 school days (120 hours). Readings on diversity, multicultural education and<br />

the sociological dimensions <strong>of</strong> schools, students and teachers, provide a formal<br />

context for reflecting on the field experience. Writing a brief proposal and<br />

approval by Education Committee are required for special requests. Internship<br />

may be during summer or January Term. Prerequisite: Educ 320 and acceptance<br />

into Teacher Education Program.<br />

Educ 480 Interdisciplinary Reflective Student Teaching Seminar (2<br />

credits, required) Reflective seminar concurrent with 490, 491, 492.<br />
