considerations and other basic coaching responsibilities. The second phase <strong>of</strong> the<br />

course will be concerned with history, objectives, rules, teaching methods,<br />

performance skills, technical information (<strong>of</strong>fense, defense, strategy, etc), care<br />

and fitting <strong>of</strong> equipment, training techniques, <strong>of</strong>ficiating, etc.<br />

PE 302 Sports Health (Health Sciences Applied to Coaching) (3 credits)<br />

Current theory and definitions <strong>of</strong> sports medicine will be discussed as well as the<br />

prevention and correction <strong>of</strong> accidents in athletic activities. The use <strong>of</strong> proper<br />

personal and field equipment, support methods, conditioning exercises, the<br />

medical examination and therapeutic aids will be demonstrated. Laboratory work<br />

includes the clinical use <strong>of</strong> physiotherapy methods. Anatomy and Physiology<br />

(BIOL 110, 111) would be helpful.<br />

PE 202 Theory and Techniques <strong>of</strong> Coaching 3 credits<br />

PE 203 The Philosophy, Principles and<br />

Organization <strong>of</strong> Athletics in Education 3 credits<br />

PE 302 Sports Health 3 credits<br />

PHED 164 Responding to Emergencies and<br />

Community CPR<br />

2 credits<br />

PHED 164 Responding to Emergencies and Community CPR (meets<br />

full term–2 credits) Course will consist <strong>of</strong> Responding To Emergencies (RTE)<br />

first aid, Adult CPR with AED (Automatic External Defibrillator), along with child<br />

and infant CPR. Those completing this course will receive certifications from the<br />

American Red Cross for RTE first aid (good for 3 years), Adult CPR with AED,<br />

along with child and infant CPR (good for 1 year). Course fee $100.<br />

Additional Requirements<br />

New York State requires all applicants for teaching, coaching, counseling and<br />

administrative certification (provisional and permanent) to have taken a certified<br />

course in Child Abuse Recognition and Reporting. Further information regarding<br />

To apply for a coaching certificate from <strong>Hartwick</strong> <strong>College</strong>, you must complete the<br />

above requirements. The certificate may be obtained through the <strong>Hartwick</strong><br />

<strong>College</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Physical Education.<br />
