There were 628 Enumerators, 588 being in the district and the remainder in the town,<br />

and were drawn, from the cultivating class 198, ywathugyts 158, se-ein-gaungs 143 ;<br />

traders<br />

clerks, process-servers, <strong>of</strong>fice peons and yazawutgaungs constituted the remainder.<br />

(e) The final enumeration.—The final <strong>Census</strong> on the night <strong>of</strong> 1st March came <strong>of</strong>f without<br />

a hitch. Many<br />

<strong>of</strong>ficials showed a creditable interest in the work. The Superintendents<br />

and Supervisors were all out on that night checking and helping their Enumerators.<br />

Boat enumeration and enumeration <strong>of</strong> travellers began on that night too and was carried<br />

on up to the 3rd in distant places and the figures for these were incorporated in their respective<br />

charge summaries. The schedules in the case <strong>of</strong> the British <strong>India</strong> Steam Navigation<br />

steamer Karagola-j which were given out to the master at Kyaukpyu, were collected here.<br />

(/) The enumerators' abstracts were all more or less prepared on the morning <strong>of</strong> the 2nd<br />

March after the taking <strong>of</strong> the final census. These abstracts were checked with the schedules<br />

by the Superintendents and Supervisors and the whole finally submitted to the district <strong>of</strong>fice<br />

by the 6th March. * * * The district totals were then made out and the result telegraphed<br />

to you and the Commissioner <strong>of</strong> <strong>Census</strong>, Calcutta, so as to reach by the 7th. * *<br />

ig) There was no non-synchronous census record for this district. * * *<br />

(h) There were no prosecutions sanctioned under the provisions <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Census</strong> Act. *<br />

i) The expenditure incurred on account <strong>of</strong> transmitting the <strong>Census</strong> paper and schedules<br />

to the Charge Superintendents and by them to the District <strong>of</strong>fice was Rs. 104-12-0. * *<br />

(/) The result <strong>of</strong> the census in this district may be accepted as fairly correct.<br />

( k )<br />

The vital statistics for the past ten years ending December 1900 show 30 107 births<br />

and 19,342 deaths.<br />
