(/) The result* obtained may, I think, be accepted to be as correct as it is possible to make<br />

a <strong>Census</strong>. Every effort was made to make it complete, and I think we can claim to have succeeded.<br />

(k) The registration <strong>of</strong> deaths was introduced into this district from the 1st January 1899.<br />

No epidemic <strong>of</strong> any kind affected the population during the last ten years. The increase in<br />

the population is attributable chiefly to natural causes and partly to the growing importance<br />

<strong>of</strong> the district, and the facilities afforded by the railway.<br />

In 1896-97 a part <strong>of</strong> this district was subject to scarcity, which was <strong>of</strong>ficially declared to<br />

be famine, and a great many people went to other districts ; but I think the increase shown in<br />

the population indicates that nearly all have returned.<br />

<strong>Burma</strong>,—No. 18, dated the 22nd April <strong>1901</strong>.<br />

With reference to your Circular No. 24 <strong>of</strong> <strong>1901</strong>, 1 have the honour to submit the <strong>Census</strong><br />

report <strong>of</strong> the Yamethin Municipality.<br />

(1) In preparing the general register <strong>of</strong> the town <strong>of</strong> Yamethin the names <strong>of</strong> villages<br />

and the number <strong>of</strong> blocks were compared with the register maintained in the Municipal<br />

<strong>of</strong>fice showing the names <strong>of</strong> headmen <strong>of</strong> wards and blocks, and on the 2nd <strong>of</strong> October an<br />

abstract <strong>of</strong> the Yamethin town register was forwarded to you. * * *<br />

(2) The numbering <strong>of</strong> houses was commenced on the 10th October and in some blocks<br />

on the 12th, and the earliest date <strong>of</strong> completion was the 14th October and the latest the<br />

23rd October.<br />

(3) Excluding the railway, there were 41 blocks within municipal limits, for which<br />

three Supervisors and three Charge Superintendents were appointed. * * *<br />

There were 41 Enumerators and one Assistant Enumerator. * * * Of the 41<br />

Enumerators appointed, 22 were clerks and licensed copyists, one was a Municipal <strong>of</strong>fice<br />

peon, 1 1 were ayatoks and akwetoks, and seven were traders and others.<br />

Preliminary enumeration.—The earliest date on which the preliminary enumeration<br />

took place was the 1st February and the latest on the 9th, and the testing by the Supervisors<br />

was completed on the 20th February. * * *<br />

The work performed by the Supervisors and Charge Superintendents was on the<br />

whole satisfactory.<br />

were two Charge Superintendents, eight Supervisors,<br />

land 101 Enumerators employed for taking the <strong>Census</strong>, and the majority were selected<br />

from the educated and respectable class <strong>of</strong> men in the town.
