(/) The number<br />

<strong>of</strong> occupied houses and <strong>of</strong> males and females may, I think, be taken as<br />

very nearly accurate. The ages cannot be expected to be more than approximately accurate.<br />

Immigrants come from all parts <strong>of</strong> <strong>Burma</strong> and from <strong>India</strong>, but chiefly from the districts <strong>of</strong><br />

the dry zone <strong>of</strong> Upper <strong>Burma</strong>. The immigrants come chiefly to the Wakema township, the<br />

population <strong>of</strong> which has increased since 189 1 from 64,402 to 106,179 or 64 per cent.<br />

<strong>Census</strong> Operations, <strong>Burma</strong>,—No. 903-3C.—3, dated the 26th March <strong>1901</strong>.<br />

I HAVE the honour to forward a brief report on the <strong>Census</strong> operations in the towns <strong>of</strong><br />

Myaungmya and Pantanaw.<br />

Town <strong>of</strong> Myaungmya.<br />

The general register for the town <strong>of</strong> Myaungmya was commenced about the 1st September<br />

and completed about the 15th <strong>of</strong> that month.<br />

House-numbering was commenced on the 2nd December and completed by the 1 2th<br />

December.<br />

The number <strong>of</strong> Charge Superintendents appointed was one, Supervisors two, and 20<br />

Enumerators.<br />

Schedules and forms were received early in January and an additional supply, in compliance<br />

with the revised abstract, forwarded about the 25th <strong>of</strong> January <strong>1901</strong>. Forms were<br />

first distributed<br />

on the 1 8th January and again at the end <strong>of</strong> January. The preliminary<br />

enumeration commenced on the 4th February and was completed in Circle No. 1 on the 16th<br />

February and in Circle No. 2 on the 1 2th February.<br />

The final enumeration<br />

commenced at 7 P.M. on the night <strong>of</strong> the 1st March, and was completed<br />

by 11-30 P-M- in Circle No- 2 and by 2 A.M- on the 2nd March in Circle No. 1.<br />

The steamship Bandoola from Bassein came in at 11-30 P-M- on the night <strong>of</strong> the<br />

final <strong>Census</strong>, and the schedules <strong>of</strong> passengers and crew were handed over to the Supervisor<br />

<strong>of</strong> Circle No- 2 about 11-55 P-M.<br />

The number<br />

<strong>of</strong> Supervisors and Enumerators actually employed were<br />

Circle No- 1—Maung Gyi up to end <strong>of</strong> January ; Maung Lu from the 5th February<br />

to the date <strong>of</strong> final enumeration-<br />

Circle No- 2—Mr- C- J- W- Donovan ; Maung Po Sin for moving and moored<br />

boats; and the number <strong>of</strong> Enumerators employed was 28—20 for<br />

the town and eight for boats.<br />

Mr- Fisher, Head Master <strong>of</strong> the Municipal School, took an interest in the <strong>Census</strong> as<br />

Charge Superintendent arid Mr. Donovan, Chief Clerk, did good work as Supervisor, and<br />

also in<br />

the <strong>of</strong>fice.<br />

Town <strong>of</strong> Pantanaw.<br />

The general register for the town was commenced in September and completed about<br />

the 20th <strong>of</strong> that month.<br />

House-numbering was commenced about the 1st November and completed by the end<br />

<strong>of</strong> that month-*****<br />

The circle lists were started at the beginning <strong>of</strong> October and completed in the first<br />

week <strong>of</strong> that month.*****<br />

Schedules and forms were received about the middle <strong>of</strong> December in accordance with<br />

the abstract forwarded on the 6th October and were found to be sufficient. The preliminary<br />

enumeration was commenced about the 20th January and completed about the 15th February.<br />

The circle summaries were received by the Superintendent on the 3rd March and the<br />

charge summaries were received in the district <strong>of</strong>fice on the 6th March, and .were included in<br />

the district summary, which was completed by 2 P.M. on the 7th March, the provisicnal totals<br />

being wired to Calcutta and Rangoon at 2-30 P-M- on that date.<br />

The number <strong>of</strong> Supervisors and Enumerators actually employed on the night <strong>of</strong> the final<br />

<strong>Census</strong> was three Supervisors and thirty-three Enumerators.<br />
