German trade unions and Polish migrant workers 219
trade unions contribute to the re-shaping of cultural landscapes which are currently
nationally bounded.
Notes
1 The national differences in the organisation of industrial relations are significant
between the member states of EU. The tendencies of disorganisation described differ
from member state to member state according to the national structure of industrial
relations (Müller-Jentsch 1995; Hyman 1996, Lubanski 1999). Therefore, the
description of the situation is restricted to Germany.
2 The abbreviation IG BAU stands for Industriegewerkschaft Bauen-Agrar-Umwelt
(Industrial trade union Construction–Agriculture–Environment). In this chapter the
term IG BAU will be used exclusively, and includes the period when the trade union
used the name IG BSE, i.e. IG-BAU–Steine–Erden (Industrial trade union
Construction–Stones–Earth).
