This course is a study of infant and toddler development,<br />
brain research and care giving as related to environments,<br />
resources and curriculum. Skill building in assessment,<br />
intervention, inclusion and home visits will be developed.<br />
Curriculum development and direct observation in infant<br />
and toddler programs are requirements.<br />
34 – OBSERVING AND RECORDING CHILDREN’S<br />
BEHAVIOR (3 UNITS) CSU<br />
This course explores appropriate use of assessment and<br />
observation strategies to document development, growth,<br />
play, and learning to join with families and professionals<br />
in promoting children’s success. Recording strategies,<br />
rating systems, portfolios, and multiple assessment tools<br />
are explored.<br />
36 - LITERATURE FOR EARLY CHILDHOOD<br />
(1 UNIT) CSU<br />
This course is an overview of literature suitable for<br />
children from birth through eight years. Students analyze<br />
a wide variety of books to address contemporary issues.<br />
Techniques of selection and presentation methods are<br />
explored.<br />
38 - ADMINISTRATION AND SUPERVISION OF<br />
EARLY CHILDHOOD PROGRAMS I (3 UNITS)<br />
CSU<br />
Prerequisite: Completion of Child Development 001 and 002 with<br />
grades of “C” or better.<br />
This course provides an understanding of the principles and<br />
practices necessary to run an Early Childhood Education<br />
Program. State of California licensing regulations, fiscal<br />
planning and management, personnel management,<br />
child abuse recognition and reporting requirements, and<br />
brochure development are some of the important topics<br />
covered. Professionalism and quality standards are<br />
emphasized.<br />
39 - ADMINISTRATION AND SUPERVISION OF<br />
EARLY CHILDHOOD PROGRAMS II (3 UNITS)<br />
CSU<br />
Prerequisite: Completion of Child Development 001 and 002 with<br />
grades of “C” or better.<br />
Recommended: Child Development 038.<br />
This course provides an in depth study of finances, including<br />
grant and proposal writing. Licensing requirements for a<br />
wide variety of children’s programs will be explored.<br />
Risk management and disaster preparedness for children’s<br />
programs will be covered. Other topics covered include<br />
advocacy, staff development, professionalism as well as<br />
current trends in child development.<br />
42 - THE CHILD IN A DIVERSE SOCIETY<br />
(3 UNITS) CSU<br />
Recommended: Child Development 011.<br />
This course is designed to enhance a teacher’s sensitivity<br />
to and knowledge of cultural diversity. Appropriate<br />
multicultural instructional resources will be developed.<br />
Meaningful curriculum activities and experiences will be<br />
explored. Students will be introduced to creative ethnic<br />
materials in the areas of art, language, music, literature,<br />
dramatic play, foods, etc.<br />
45 - PROGRAMS FOR CHILDREN WITH<br />
SPECIAL NEEDS II (3 UNITS) CSU<br />
This course examines specific classifications and special<br />
characteristics of exceptional children. Information on<br />
legislation for exceptional children is explored. IDEA, the<br />
IEP process, inclusion, early identification, and curricular<br />
approaches are examined. Students explore a variety of<br />
disabilities from a child development perspective including<br />
definition and educational implications.<br />
65 - ADULT SUPERVISION/EARLY CHILDHOOD<br />
MENTORING (2 UNITS)<br />
Prerequisite: Completion of Child Development 038 with a grade of<br />
“C” or better, one year of teaching experience or a two semester C.D.<br />
practicum course. Meets the Child Development Matrix requirement.<br />
Course presents principles and practices in staff relations<br />
and the supervision and evaluation of staff in early<br />
childhood programs. The study of methods of clinical<br />
supervision and performance evaluation, leadership styles,<br />
group dynamics, conflict resolution, staff development,<br />
staff roles and responsibilities are explored.<br />
75 - CHILD SAFETY (1 UNIT)<br />
This course offers a first aid and cardiopulmonary<br />
resuscitation (CPR) training program giving individuals<br />
the knowledge and skills necessary to prevent, recognize,<br />
and provide basic care for injuries and sudden illnesses<br />
until advanced medical personnel arrive. American Red<br />
Cross CPR and First Aid certificates are awarded upon<br />
successful completion of the course.<br />
