67 - WRITING LABORATORY (.5 UNIT) RPT 3 –<br />

NDA (P/NP)<br />

Students are given individual help in improving their<br />

composition skills for all courses requiring the completion<br />

of written assignments and essays, laboratory reports,<br />

library and research papers, and term papers. Assistance is<br />

provided on organization, spelling, punctuation, grammar,<br />

mechanics, critical thinking, and understanding literary<br />

terms. Laboratory: 65 minutes per week.<br />

73 - BEGINNING COLLEGE READING AND<br />

WRITING (3 UNITS) NDA (P/NP)<br />

Prerequisite: Completions of Developmental Communications 020<br />

with a grade of “C” or better, or appropriate score on assessment test.<br />

English fundamentals including grammar, spelling,<br />

punctuation, and construction of sentences are taught in<br />

their application to this introductory composition course.<br />

This course prepares students for English 28 and serves<br />

as an alternative to English 21.<br />

101 - COLLEGE READING AND COMPOSITION<br />

I (3 UNITS) UC:CSU<br />

Prerequisite: Completion of English 028 or English 031 with a grade<br />

of “C” or better, or appropriate score on assessment test.<br />

English 101 is a course in critical reading and prose<br />

writing designed to refine the student’s skills in thinking<br />

logically, reading carefully, and writing effectively. Stress<br />

is placed on the organization and composition of objective<br />

expository essays, including the research paper.<br />

102 - COLLEGE READING AND COMPOSITION<br />

II (3 UNITS) UC:CSU<br />

Prerequisite: Completion of English 101 with a grade of “C” or better.<br />

English 102 is designed to reinforce the critical reading<br />

and writing skills presented in English 101 through the<br />

study of fiction, poetry, and drama. Emphasized are the<br />

analysis, interpretation, and appreciation of literature.<br />

Stress is placed on the organization and composition of<br />

critical essays, including the research paper.<br />

127 - CREATIVE WRITING (3 UNITS) UC:CSU -<br />

RPT 3<br />

Prerequisite: Completion of English 101 with a grade of “C” or better.<br />

This course is designed for those who want to learn the<br />

craft of writing professionally. Students write poems,<br />

plays, stories, or essays and present them for informal<br />

discussion and criticism by the class and instructor. The<br />

course offers an opportunity to discover and develop talent<br />

and to practice basic professional writing techniques.<br />

137 - LIBRARY RESEARCH AND<br />

BIBLIOGRAPHY (1 UNIT) UC:CSU<br />

Prerequisite: Completion of English 101 with a grade of “C” or better<br />

or concurrent enrollment.<br />

The student will learn to locate, evaluate, interpret,<br />

analyze, and organize information from a wide variety of<br />

library and internet sources with the object of producing<br />

a finished research paper. Students will learn to refine a<br />

topic, take notes, outline, document sources, and format<br />

a research paper.<br />

203 - WORLD LITERATURE I (3 UNITS) UC:CSU<br />

Prerequisite: Completion of English 101 with a grade of “C” or better.<br />

Great works of world literature are studied in the context of<br />

the cultures that produced them. Mythic, classical, Hebrew,<br />

Greek, Roman, Middle Ages, and the Renaissance writers<br />

are read and discussed.<br />

204 - WORLD LITERATURE II (3 UNITS)<br />

UC:CSU<br />

Prerequisite: Completion of English 101 with a grade of “C” or better.<br />

The subject matter of English 203 is continued: masterpieces<br />

of world literature. Selections studied are from the Neo-<br />

Classic, the Romantic, the Realistic, and the Modern<br />

periods.<br />

205 - ENGLISH LITERATURE I (3 UNITS)<br />

UC:CSU<br />

Prerequisite: Completion of English 101 with a grade of “C” or better.<br />

This course surveys the literature of England from that of<br />

the Old English period to that of the late Neo-Classical<br />

period.<br />

206 - ENGLISH LITERATURE II (3 UNITS)<br />

UC:CSU<br />

Prerequisite: Completion of English 101 with a grade of “C” or better.<br />

This course is a continuation of English 205. British<br />

literature of the Romantic, Victorian, and Modern periods<br />

is read and discussed.<br />

207 - AMERICAN LITERATURE I (3 UNITS)<br />

UC:CSU<br />

Prerequisite: Completion of English 101 with a grade of “C” or better.<br />

This course introduces American writers and writings<br />

from colonial times to 1865. Besides studying with major<br />

writers, students will become acquainted with writers who<br />

suggest the diversity of subject and opinion in American<br />

literature.<br />
