This course helps beginning ESL students improve their<br />

reading, writing, listening and speaking skills for college<br />

For low-intermediate ESL students.<br />

This course assists students in improving their reading,<br />

writing, listening, and speaking skills to prepare for<br />

college work.<br />

84 - COLLEGE ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE<br />

I (5 UNITS) NDA<br />

Prerequisite: Appropriate score on ESL assessment test.<br />

This course is planned for students whose native tongue<br />

is not English or who need assistance in using English as<br />

a second language. The course stresses study of idioms,<br />

sentence structure, word order, vocabulary, and reading<br />

for comprehension. It also provides practice in writing<br />

compositions.<br />

85 - COLLEGE ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE<br />

II (5 UNITS) CSU<br />

Prerequisite: Completion of English 084 with a grade of “C” or better,<br />

or appropriate score on ESL assessment test.<br />

This course is designed for intermediate level students of<br />

English as a second language. It includes pronunciation<br />

practices, intermediate grammar, vocabulary, word order,<br />

idioms, and reading comprehension. Writing practice is<br />

in the form of dictation, simple paragraphs, and short<br />

compositions.<br />

86 - COLLEGE ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE<br />

III (5 UNITS) UC:CSU<br />

Prerequisite: Completion of English 085 with a grade of “C” or better,<br />

or appropriate score on ESL assessment test.<br />

This course is designed for advanced students of English<br />

as a second language. It emphasizes writing practice and<br />

the study of vocabulary and syntax.<br />

113 - ENGLISH SPEECH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE<br />

(3 UNITS) CSU - RPT 1 (P/NP)<br />

This course is designed for students with foreign<br />

language backgrounds. It stresses the speaking of English,<br />

pronunciation, idiomatic expressions, phraseology,<br />

rhythmic inflection, grammar, vocabulary building, and<br />

oral composition.<br />
