101 - COLLECTING AND WRITING NEWS<br />
(3 UNITS) CSU<br />
This introductory course stresses instruction and practice<br />
in news gathering and news writing. Extensive practical<br />
writing experience is geared to the campus newspaper. It<br />
also includes a study of newspaper, radio, and television<br />
news. Adherence to professional writing style and legal<br />
and ethical aspects of the profession are included.<br />
105 - MASS COMMUNICATIONS (3 UNITS)<br />
UC:CSU<br />
This course is a survey and evaluation of the mass media,<br />
with special attention given to interpretation and analysis<br />
of ethical and legal media issues. Students will examine<br />
and assess arguments related to newspapers, magazines,<br />
radio, television, motion pictures and advertising, and<br />
evaluate their impact on society and the individual.<br />
108 - ARTICLE WRITING (3 UNITS) CSU - RPT 3<br />
In this course, the student learns how to write and sell staff<br />
and free-lance magazine articles. This course includes<br />
basic reporting, researching, and writing of articles, as<br />
well as the study of potential magazine markets.<br />
217 - PUBLICATIONS LABORATORY (2 UNITS)<br />
CSU - RPT 3<br />
Prerequisite: Completion of Journalism 101 with a grade of “C” or<br />
better.<br />
This course stresses modern newspaper production<br />
techniques, through the publication of the campus<br />
newspaper. Includes use of computerized typesetting<br />
equipment; graphic techniques and materials; newspaper<br />
design and make-up. Instruction is directed by the<br />
newspaper advisor, editor and staff members.<br />
218 - PRACTICAL EDITING (3 UNITS) CSU - RPT 3<br />
This course provides practical instruction and practice in<br />
writing and editing the campus newspaper. Editions are<br />
evaluated in regularly scheduled class meetings.<br />
KINESIOLOGY<br />
Note: UC grants a maximum of four semester units of<br />
credit for Kinesiology Activity courses.<br />
010 - KINESIOLOGY - SCIENTIFIC PHYSICAL<br />
FITNESS LABORATORY (1 UNIT) UC:CSU RPT 3<br />
This course teaches a scientific approach to physical<br />
fitness to improve one’s physical efficiency. It consists<br />
of an active program of physical fitness through fitness,<br />
strength, agility, and speed exercises. Students will learn<br />
how to test and be tested on the different areas of fitness<br />
and on their improvement throughout the course. (Required<br />
for 17 Unit, “Skills Certifi cate in Physical Training”).<br />
119 – KINESIOLOGY - PHYSICAL EFFICIENCY<br />
(2 UNITS) UC:CSU<br />
This course consists of an active program of physical<br />
fitness through flexibility, running, and strength exercises.<br />
Also included are weight conditioning and aerobic<br />
activities. Personalized fitness programs are developed<br />
for each student. The student will also learn the principles<br />
of fitness conditioning, weight control, and nutrition<br />
guidance. (Required for 17 Unit, “Skills Certificate in Physical<br />
Training”).<br />

385 - KINESIOLOGY (3 UNITS) UC:CSU<br />
Allows students to pursue Directed Study in Kinesiology<br />
on a contract basis under the direction of a supervising<br />
instructor. Credit Limit: A maximum of 3 units in Directed<br />
Study may be taken for credit.<br />

Beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels are offered<br />
for most of the courses listed below, but all levels may not<br />
be taught each semester.<br />
217 - SELF-DEFENSE SKILLS<br />
(Can be applied toward Associate in Arts Degree in Kinesiology).<br />
This course provides the fundamentals of safety awareness,<br />
defensive and striking techniques for dealing with standing<br />
confrontations.<br />
