This course is a study of selected American writers from<br />

the Civil War to the present.<br />

209 - CALIFORNIA LITERATURE (3 UNITS)<br />

Prerequisite: Completion of English 101 with a grade of “C” or better.<br />

California Literature presents selected works by writers<br />

observing California life: Dana, Twain, Jackson, Norris,<br />

London, Steinbeck. These readings from sources as varied<br />

as Indian legend and Hollywood memoir demonstrate<br />

such aspects of the study of literature as conflict,<br />

characterization and theme.<br />

211 - FICTION (3 UNITS) UC:CSU<br />

Prerequisite: Completion of English 101 with a grade of “C” or better.<br />

This course is a literary survey of the English and American<br />

novel from the beginnings of the 18th century to the<br />

present.<br />

212 - POETRY (3 UNITS) UC:CSU<br />

Prerequisite: Completion of English 101 with a grade of “C” or better.<br />

This course is a study of poetry. This course is designed<br />

to increase the student’s understanding and appreciation<br />

of poetic forms and their historical development. Critical<br />

reading and writing are stressed.<br />

213 - DRAMATIC LITERATURE (3 UNITS)<br />

Prerequisite: Completion of English 101 with a grade of “C” or better.<br />

This course is a survey of dramatic literature selected<br />

from significant periods of achievement from the classical<br />

period to the present day. The course evaluates and<br />

analyzes a collection of plays that have shaped dramatic<br />

literature.<br />

214 - CONTEMPORARY LITERATURE (3 UNITS)<br />

UC:CSU<br />

Prerequisite: Completion of English 101 with a grade of “C” or better.<br />

Representative examples of post World War II literature<br />

are studied in this course, including Salinger, Cheever,<br />

Updike, O’Connor, Oates, Atwood and others. Works<br />

will be examined in light of their literary attributes and<br />

their reflection of the complexities of contemporary life,<br />

values, and thought.<br />

215 - SHAKESPEARE I (3 UNITS) UC:CSU<br />

Prerequisite: Completion of English 101 with a grade of “C” or better.<br />

This is an introductory course to the Shakespeare canon,<br />

including a brief look at the theatrical background. The<br />

course will concentrate on eight major plays and poetry.<br />

218 - CHILDREN’S LITERATURE (3 UNITS) CSU<br />

Prerequisite: Completion of English 101 with a grade of “C” or better.<br />

In this survey course we will analyze picture books, folk<br />

tales, fantasy, and modern realism written for children from<br />

preschoolers to teens. 6Emphasis is on literary analyses.<br />

219 - THE LITERATURE OF AMERICAN<br />

ETHNIC GROUPS (3 UNITS) UC:CSU<br />

Prerequisite: Completion of English 101 with a grade of “C” or better.<br />

Through various readings students will visit diverse<br />

cultures in order to grasp content and meaning of the work,<br />

to look beyond plot, infer what a given author’s views are<br />

regarding people’s actions, what motivates them, and how<br />

they deal with other human beings and with conflicts that<br />

confront them as it relates to ethnicity.<br />

234 - AFRICAN-AMERICAN LITERATURE I<br />

(3 UNITS) UC:CSU<br />

Prerequisite: Completion of English 101 with a grade of “C” or better.<br />

This survey course examines the literary history of<br />

African-Americans through studies of novels, short stories,<br />

poems, dramas, and essays written by African-Americans,<br />

revealing the dynamics of American culture as interpreted<br />

by African-Americans seeking to define themselves and<br />

other Americans.<br />

239 - WOMEN IN LITERATURE (3 UNITS)<br />

UC:CSU<br />

Prerequisite: Completion of English 101 with a grade of “C” or better.<br />

This course examines the role of women in varied cultures<br />

and literary periods in novels, short stories, poetry, drama,<br />

and essays.<br />

240 - LITERATURE AND THE MOTION<br />

PICTURE I (3 UNITS) UC:CSU<br />

Prerequisite: Completion of English 101 with a grade of “C” or better.<br />

This is a course in comparative media which emphasizes<br />

the difference between film and the writings on which<br />

they were based.<br />

251 - THE SHORT STORY (3 UNITS) UC:CSU<br />

Prerequisite: Completion of English 101 with a grade of “C” or better.<br />

English 251 provides for a study of the short story as<br />

a literary genre, with emphasis on sensitive, informed<br />

reading and shared class discussions.<br />

252 - THE ENGLISH BIBLE AS LITERATURE<br />

(3 UNITS) UC:CSU<br />

Prerequisite: Completion of English 101 with a grade of “C” or better.<br />
