385 - DIRECTED STUDY FRENCH (3 UNITS)<br />

UC*:CSU<br />

Prerequisite: Completion of French 002 with a grade of “C” or better.<br />

Allows students to pursue Directed Study in French<br />

on a contract basis under the direction of a supervising<br />

instructor.<br />

* UC credit may be granted by petition after transfer.<br />

Credit limit: a maximum of 3 units in Directed Study may be taken for<br />

credit.<br />

GEOGRAPHY<br />

1 - PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY (3 UNITS) UC:CSU<br />

Physical Geography is an exploration of the atmosphere,<br />

hydrosphere, biosphere, and lithosphere. Major topics<br />

are Earth-Sun relations, mapping and satellite imagery,<br />

weather and climate patterns, ecology, soils, plate<br />

tectonics, landform development, and human impacts on<br />

the environment. This is a foundation course for students<br />

interested in the Earth sciences and environmental studies,<br />

as well as a major in geography. Field trips and nature<br />

walks are a regular part of the class.<br />

7 - WORLD REGIONAL GEOGRAPHY (3 UNITS)<br />

UC:CSU<br />

This course examines the physical and cultural environments<br />

of Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, Africa, Asia,<br />

and the Pacific. Physical landscapes, climates, population,<br />

cultural patterns, livelihoods, and international connections<br />

are all explored.<br />

15 - PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY LABORATORY<br />

(2 UNITS) UC:CSU<br />

Prerequisite or Corequisite: Completion of Geography 001 with a grade<br />

of “C” or better or concurrent enrollment.<br />

In this course, students use maps, lab manual diagrams and<br />

exercises, aerial photos, plants, soils and rocks, to examine<br />

earth-sun relationships, the science of maps, weather and<br />

climate, biological adaptations and types of landforms.<br />

GEOLOGY<br />

1 - PHYSICAL GEOLOGY (3 UNITS) UC:CSU<br />

Recommended corequisite: Completion of Geology 006 with a grade<br />

of “C” or better or concurrent enrollment.<br />

This introductory course surveys the materials and<br />

structure of the Earth, and the processes which modify it.<br />

Major topics to be studied include rocks and their mineral<br />

composition, plate tectonics, volcanoes and earthquakes.<br />

Also studied will be the agents of erosion; the work of<br />

rivers, glaciers, wind, land slides, and the oceans. Field<br />

trips to geological sites of Southern California are made.<br />

6-PHYSICAL GEOLOGY LABORATORY<br />

(2 UNITS) UC:CSU<br />

Learn to identify minerals, rocks and fossils. Witness how<br />

the geologic history of an area can be understood by using<br />

simple geologic principles. Discover how to interpret<br />

topographic and geologic maps; aerial photographs and<br />

earthquake seismic waves. Take field trips to local sites<br />

and learn about the rocks, landslides, faults, and the<br />

geologic past of the <strong>Los</strong> <strong>Angeles</strong> area.<br />

HEALTH<br />

2 - HEALTH AND FITNESS (3 UNITS) UC:CSU<br />

Lecture and Laboratory. This course emphasizes healthy<br />

psychological and physical lifestyles, with importance<br />

on wellness, disease prevention, nutrition, sexuality,<br />

reproduction, drugs, alcohol, tobacco, aging, stress<br />

management, weight control, injury prevention, and<br />

lifetime fitness. The physical fitness segment focuses<br />

on individual improvement utilizing cardio respiratory,<br />

flexibility, and strengthening activities. (Can be applied<br />

toward Associate in Arts Degree in Kinesiology).<br />

6 - NUTRITION FOR HEALTHFUL LIVING AND<br />

FITNESS ACTIVITIES (3 UNITS) CSU<br />

Basic nutrition theories, information for healthful food<br />

purchasing, the relationship of nutrition to disease, and<br />

general health concerns including weight management are<br />

discussed. Benefits of exercise and techniques for body<br />

conditioning are learned. Class time includes participation<br />

in fitness activities including developmental exercises.<br />

This course requires 1:25 hours per week of student lab<br />

work to be scheduled as arranged with instructor. 1:25 TBA<br />

11 - PRINCIPLES OF HEALTHFUL LIVING<br />

(3 UNITS) UC:CSU<br />

This course teaches concepts to use as guidelines for<br />

healthy, responsible living. Importance is placed on<br />

relating health concepts to the individual’s well-being<br />

in personal, social, professional, and leadership roles.<br />

Health topics cover emotional/physical/social/mental<br />

health, cardio respiratory fitness, nutrition, chronic and<br />

communicable diseases, environmental health issues,<br />

sexuality, reproduction, addiction and the life cycle. (Can<br />

be applied toward Associate in Arts Degree in Kinesiology).<br />
