180 - APPLIED MUSIC LABORATORY<br />

(1.5 UNITS) CSU - RPT 3<br />

Prerequisite: Placement audition.<br />

Corequisite: Concurrent enrollment in Music Major Theory sequence<br />

and Performance ensemble classes are required and 181 or 182 or 183<br />

or 184.<br />

This course provides students with individual instruction<br />

and guided practice designed to improve instrumental<br />

or vocal technique, musicality, and performance skills.<br />

Basic repertoire and historical performance practices are<br />

emphasized. NOTE: Continued enrollment in this course<br />

is dependent upon a successful placement audition.<br />

181 - APPLIED MUSIC I (.5 UNITS) UC:CSU<br />

This course is designed for students to develop study,<br />

practice, and performance skills on a principal instrument<br />

or voice through private lessons and recital and jury<br />

performances. Parallels the offering for and requirements<br />

of UC and CSU music majors.<br />

182 - APPLIED MUSIC II (.5 UNITS) UC:CSU<br />

Prerequisite: A successful audition on the first day of classes<br />

is required for continued enrollment.<br />

185 - DIRECTED STUDY (1 UNIT) UC*:CSU<br />

By arrangement with instructor.<br />

Special studies will be undertaken with the guidance<br />

of weekly faculty meetings. Topics or projects must be<br />

approved by the faculty member in charge, and the course<br />

of study is to be submitted to the Humanities and Fine<br />

Arts Division Chairman at the beginning of the semester.<br />

* UC credit may be granted by petition after transfer.<br />

200 - INTRODUCTION TO MUSIC THEORY<br />

(4 UNITS) UC:CSU<br />

Music theory is a set of principles used to analyze the<br />

construction and perception of music. This course is the<br />

first in a sequence of four levels of music theory intended<br />

for music majors who plan to earn a music certificate,<br />

degree, and/or transfer to a four-year music program.<br />

It presents the principles of tonality—the tendency of<br />

certain types of music to progress toward a central tone or<br />

key. Topics will include a review of music fundamentals<br />

and an introduction to melodic construction, two-part<br />

counterpoint, figured bass, Roman numeral analysis,<br />

basic harmonic elaboration and reduction, cadences<br />

and four-part voice leading. In addition, it will address<br />

musicianship—the ability to read, perform and transcribe<br />

music—including techniques for sight singing, basic<br />

keyboard harmony and melodic and harmonic dictation.<br />

201 - HARMONY I (3 UNITS) UC:CSU<br />

Prerequisite: Completion of Music 200 or equivalent with a grade of<br />

“C” or better.<br />

Corequisite: Concurrent enrollment of Music 211.<br />

This course is the second in a sequence of four levels of<br />

music theory intended for music majors who plan to earn<br />

a music certificate, degree, and/or transfer to a four-year<br />

music program. It continues where MUSIC 200 left off;<br />

presenting the principles of contrapuntal expansion of<br />

tonality. Topics will include the elaboration and reduction<br />

of tonic, pre-dominant and dominant harmonies, and<br />

phrase structure. Concurrent enrollment in MUSIC 211<br />

is essential for the synthesis of concepts presented in this<br />

course.<br />

202 - HARMONY II (3 UNITS) UC:CSU<br />

Prerequisite: Completion of Music 201 or equivalent with a grade of<br />

“C” or better.<br />

Corequisite: Concurrent enrollment in Music 212.<br />

This course is the third in a sequence of four levels of<br />

music theory intended for music majors who plan to earn<br />

a music certificate, degree, and/or transfer to a four-year<br />

music program. It continues where MUSIC 201 left off;<br />

presenting the principles of chromatic expansion of tonality<br />

and an introduction to musical form. Topics will include<br />

harmonic sequences, applied chords, modulation, binary<br />

form, modal mixture, Neapolitan chords, augmented<br />

sixth chords and period structure. Concurrent enrollment<br />

in MUSIC 212 is essential for the synthesis of concepts<br />

presented in this course.<br />
