8. Glossary of Terms<br />

Hydrology: Pertaining to <strong>the</strong> study of water on <strong>the</strong> surface of <strong>the</strong> land, in <strong>the</strong> soil<br />

and underlying geology, and in <strong>the</strong> air.<br />

Impervious surface: Any material that reduces or prevents absorption of water<br />

into land.<br />

Infrastructure: Public services and facilities, such as sewage-disposal systems,<br />

water supply systems, o<strong>the</strong>r utility systems, and road and site access systems.<br />

Interpretation: A communication process designed to reveal meanings and<br />

relationships of our cultural and natural heritage through involvement with<br />

objects, artifacts, landscapes, sites, and oral histories.<br />

Kilowatt: A measure of <strong>the</strong> rate of electrical flow equal to 1,000 watts.<br />

Kilowatt-hour: A measure of quality of electrical consumption equal to <strong>the</strong><br />

power of 1 kilowatt acting <strong>for</strong> 1 hour.<br />

Land<strong>for</strong>m: Configuration of land surface (topography).<br />

Mean sea level: The average altitude of sea surface <strong>for</strong> all tidal stages.<br />

Mitigation measure: A measure proposed that would eliminate, avoid, rectify,<br />

compensate <strong>for</strong>, or reduce significant environmental effects (see State CEQA<br />

Guidelines §15370).<br />

National Register of Historic Places (NRHP): The official federal list of<br />

buildings, structures, objects, sites, and districts worthy of historic preservation.<br />

The register recognizes resources of local, State, and national significance, and<br />

includes four criteria under which a resource can be considered significant <strong>for</strong><br />

listing on <strong>the</strong> Register. The registers lists those properties: (1) that are associated<br />

with events that made a significant contribution to <strong>the</strong> broad patterns of our<br />

history, (2) that are associated with <strong>the</strong> lives of persons significant in our past, (3)<br />

that embody <strong>the</strong> distinctive character of a type, period, or method of construction<br />

or that represent <strong>the</strong> work of a master, or that possess an artistic value, or that<br />

represent a significant and distinguishable entity whose components may lack<br />

individual distinction, and (4) that have yielded or may be likely to yield<br />

in<strong>for</strong>mation important in prehistory or history.<br />

Native species: A plant or animal that is historically indigenous to a specific site<br />

area.<br />

Open space: An area with few or no paved surfaces or buildings, which may be<br />

primarily in its natural state or improved <strong>for</strong> use as a park.<br />

Public <strong>Resource</strong>s Code (PRC): Cali<strong>for</strong>nia code addressing natural, cultural,<br />

aes<strong>the</strong>tic, and recreation resources of <strong>the</strong> State.<br />

Riparian habitat: The vegetative and wildlife areas that are adjacent to perennial<br />

and intermittent streams and are delineated by <strong>the</strong> existence of plant species<br />

normally found near fresh water.<br />
