4 SACRAMENTO REGIONAL ITS ARCHITECTURE
The Sacramento Regional ITS Architecture is a roadmap for transportation systems integration in
the Sacramento region over the next 20 years. The architecture was originally developed in 2001
through a cooperative effort by the region’s transportation agencies. It has been extensively
updated as part of this current effort. The architecture represents a shared vision of how each
agency’s systems will work together in the future, sharing information and resources to provide a
safer, more efficient, and more effective transportation system for travelers in the region.
The architecture is an important new tool that will be used by:
• Operating Agencies to recognize and plan for transportation integration opportunities in
the region.
• Planning Agencies to better reflect integration opportunities and operational needs into
the transportation planning process.
• Other organizations and individuals that use the transportation system in the region.
The architecture provides an overarching framework that spans all of these organizations and
individual transportation projects. Using the architecture, each transportation project can be
viewed as an element of the overall transportation system, providing visibility into the relationship
between individual transportation projects and ways to costeffectively build an integrated
transportation system over time.
Architecture updates for the Sacramento Region described in the following sections can also be
found on the
Sacramento Regional ITS Architecture website:
4.1 Scope
The scope of a regional ITS architecture is defined by three attributes:
• Geographic scope
• Timeframe
• Scope of services covered by the architecture
For the Sacramento Regional ITS Architecture the geographic scope has been updated to include
the counties of Sacramento, Yolo, Yuba, Sutter, and the western halves of Placer and El Dorado.
Figure 4.1 provides a representation of the geographic coverage of the architecture.
The geographic scope of the Sacramento Regional ITS Architecture borders on the geographic
scope of several other architectures. There is an overlap with the Tahoe Gateway ITS Architecture,
which covers the eastern halves of Placer and El Dorado counties (as well as several other
counties). There is some relationship as well with the Tahoe Basin ITS Architecture, which
focuses on the region around Lake Tahoe. The geographic extent of these two architectures is also
shown in the Figure below. In addition, the Bay Area ITS Architecture borders the SACOG
architecture to the southwest. Finally, the California Statewide ITS Architecture, which focuses on
