The higher state educational establishment of Ukraine

1. The names of the acids with high degree of oxidation are made up with the
suffix -ic-um. E .g.: acidum salicylicum – salicylic acid; acidum sulfuricum –
sulphuric acid.
2. The names of the acids with low degree of oxidation are made up with the
suffix -os-um. E.g.: acidum sulfurosum – sulphureous acid; acidum nitrosum –
nitrous acid.
3. The names of oxygenless acids are formed with the help of the prefix
hydro – and the suffix -ic-um. E.g.: acidum hydrochloricum – hydrochloric acid;
acidum hydrosulfuricum – hydrosulphuric acid.
The names of oxides
The names of oxides (oxydum, i n), peroxides (peroxydum, i n) and
hydroxides (hydroxydum, i n) consist of two nouns: in the first place the name of
cation is put (a neuter noun of the 2-nd declension in Genetivus), in the second
place the name of anion is put (a neuter noun of the 2-nd declension in
Nominativus). E.g.: Zinci oxydum – zinc oxide; Hydrogenii peroxydum – hydrogen
peroxide; Calcii hydroxydum – calcium hydroxide.
The names of salts
The names of salts consist of the name of cation in Gen. sing. and the name
of anion in Nom. sing. Both cation and anion are nouns.
