In the Old Greek alphabet there are 24 letters. The vowels: ε, η, ι, o, υ, ω, the
rest are consonants.
Writing and pronunciation of the Greek letters
1. Sigma has two graphic signs: σ – in the beginning and in the middle of a
word;
ς – in the end of a word.
2. Gamma (γ) is pronounced as English [g].
Gamma is pronounced as English [n] before λ, χ, κ, ξ.
The Greek diphthongs
The diphthongs are pronounced as a single syllable. All of them are long by
nature.

Greek words which are beginning with a vowel, a diphthong or “ρ” have a
spirit (spiritus).
There are two kinds of a spirit: thick and thin.
