It has turned out historically that the Greeks have originated sciences and
have given their lexical material for the naming of scientific and everyday objects.
Later on this word-forming tradition passed to the Romans. Both Greek and Latin
languages are used in scientific naming. Greek terms-elements are used more often
in the clinical terminology, Latin ones – in the anatomic terminology.
A lot of clinical terms (names of diseases, pathological processes, methods of
investigation and treatment etc.) are compound words formed by the joining of two
or more word-forming elements derived from Greek on the whole. By their position
terms-elements may be initial (standing in the beginning of a word), intermediate
(in the middle of a word), finite (in the end of a word). E. g.:
hyper-glyk-aemia (the heightened content of sugar in the blood);
chole-cyst-itis (the inflammation of the gall-bladder).
One and the same term-element may be initial as well as finite. Depending on
the position it may change its form: haem-o-philia, haemat-uria, ur-aemia.
Terms-elements are joined between themselves directly or with the help of
connecting vowels. If the second term-element begins with a vowel, the connecting
vowel is usually not used. If the second term-element begins with a consonant, the
joining vowel is used. When Greek terms-elements are joined the connecting vowel
-o- is used, when Latin ones are joined, the connecting vowels -i- or -o- are used.
