The feminine adjectives (-a) are declined like the nouns of the first declension,
the masculine (-us, -er) and neuter (-um) adjectives are declined like the nouns of the
second declension.
The adjectives of the second group (the third declension) are divided into
three subgroups:
1) the adjectives with three gender endings:
-er (m), -is (f), -e (n)
saluber, salubris, salubre – curative, healing (the vocabulary form – saluber, bris,
bre);
2) the adjectives with two gender endings:
-is (m, f), -e (n)
dentalis, dentale – dental
(the vocabulary form – dentalis, e);
brevis, breve – short
(the vocabulary form – brevis, e);
3) the adjectives with one ending r, s or x which is common for all genders,
e. g.:
recens – fresh
simplex – simple
par – equal
The vocabulary form of these adjectives is like that of nouns, i. e. Nom. And
Gen. sing. are indicated:
recens, ntis (recens, recentis)
simplex, icis (simplex, simplicis)
par, paris
There is a separate group of the third declension consisting of the adjectives
with suffixes –ior (m, f) and –ius (n), in Gen. sing. – iōris. These suffixes point to
