2) remedium adjuvans (an auxiliary remedy) – the substance
which intensifies or weakens the basic remedy’s effect;
3) remedium corrigens (a correcting remedy) – the substance
which improves a medicine’s taste and smell;
4) remedium constituens (a form-making remedy) – the
substance which gives a final form to a medicine.
It is natural that the compound prescription may not contain all these
ingredients. The names of toxic and narcotic remedies are always written in the
beginning of the ingredients’ list.
7. Subscriptio (subscription) – is the instruction to a pharmaceutical chemist
about the following:
a) what is necessary to do with the substances (to mix, to
sterilize etc.);
b) what form the medicine should have (tablets, powder,
ointment, suppository etc.);
c) how many doses should be given to a patient;
d) in what packing (in the waxed or paraffined paper, in the
dark glass etc.).
8. Signatura (designation). In this part after the verb “Signa” or “Signetur”
the rules of using the medicine are given in that language which a patient
can understand.
9. Nomen medici et sigillum personale – the doctor’s signature and personal
seal.
The rules of prescription-writing
1. Nothing should be written under the word “Recipe”.
2. All the names of the medicinal substances are written in column, one
under another.
3. The names of the medicinal substances are written in the genitive case
(Gen.).
4. The first word in the prescription line is always written with a capital
letter.
5. If the name of one medicinal substance (when it consists of several words)
doesn’t go into one line, it should be carried over to the next line, a little
way away from the beginning of the line.
6. In the middle of the prescription line we should write with a capital letter:
a) the names of medicinal plants;
b) the names of medicinal preparations;
c) the names of chemical elements;
d) the names of cations in salts and oxides.
