Diphthongs
Diphthongs are combinations of two vowels which are pronounced as a
single sound or a single syllable. There are four diphthongs in Latin:
Ae and oe which are pronounced as a single sound [e], e. g.: haema (blood),
oedema (oedema).
But if a + e or o + e are not diphthongs, we put two dots above the letter e
and pronounce each vowel separately: aёr (air), poёta (poet);
au is pronounced as ou in house, e. g.: Aurum (gold);
eu as Latin e + u, pronounced rapidly as a single syllable: neurologus
(neurologist).
