5. Chapel of Reverence: This balconied chamber has
only one light source: a narrow shaft cut into the ceiling,
directly above an enormous shattered sarcophagus in the
center of the room. Thus, the coffin is brightly lit, while
shadowy illumination surrounds it to a radius of 20 feet. The
sarcophagus has long since been battered open and looted.
Treat its squares as dense rubble and the squares adjacent to
it as light rubble.
From here, a narrow spiral staircase wends upward to the
Chambers of the Keepers.
If Jebrix has alerted Emmara, the PCs encounter her here,
along with her howler familiar and two golem guards. (See
tactical encounter 6–3, page 108.)
6. Chambers of the Keepers: The former keepers of the
tomb—followers of the fallen hero—used these chambers
as living quarters. From here, they guarded the Soth Tarnel
and escorted mourners coming to pray at the tomb.
These chambers have little original furniture left; mounds
of brittle and shattered wood are stacked in the corners. One
area served as a kitchen. A chimney that pierces one wall
can be used to reach the top of Elliast’s Spire, but it is a tight
squeeze (Climb DC 10).
Emmara has claimed these chambers as her living quarters.
If the PCs get this far, they find many of her mundane possessions,
including two large chests containing the funds she
uses to finance her plans—a total of 28,000 gp. They might
also discover her spellbook (Search DC 20), hidden beneath
a false panel in the floor of the kitchen area.
7. Atop the Spire: A cleverly hidden secret door (Search
DC 30) stands at the head of the spiral stairs. The walls
here are very rough, made to look as if the builders simply
stopped tunneling.
Beyond the secret door lies a small natural cave. Its floor
is slick with rainwater; treat the cave as a shallow pool (DMG
64). A wet, narrow ledge (Balance DC 17) ascends one of the
cavern’s walls—at its highest point, there is an opening that
leads to the zenith of Elliast’s Spire.
