FEATURES OF THE AREA
The room has the following features.
Illumination: Lit torches sit in sconces every 20 feet.
Ceiling Height: The ceiling in this room is 15 feet high.
Vaults: The numerous doors lead to 5-foot-square vaults,
each of which contains the remains of a Tolstoff ancestor.
Although the doors are not locked, they can be opened only
with a successful DC 25 Strength check. Up to two characters
can assist an individual on this check.
Vault A: This vault holds Edgar and Katarin’s grandfather,
the corrupted archmage who was sealed inside by adventurers.
The door is sealed shut, locked, and reinforced with potent
magic. A permanent dimensional anchor spell inside the vault
prevents the captive from escaping by magical means.
The release of the archmage is beyond the scope of this
encounter, since his power most likely far exceeds that of the
PCs. The means of his release—as well as his statistics—are
left for you to decide.
Evil characters standing in squares that are adjacent to the
vault cast all spells and spell-like abilities at +1 caster level
and gain a +1 profane bonus on attack rolls, weapon damage
rolls, saving throws, ability checks, and skill checks.
ENCOUNTER 3-3
Edgar fights viciously. He fires poisoned arrows until the
wolverine gets into position; then he drops his bow and
charges forward, drawing his melee weapons. Depending
on his foe, he might mix in a touch attack with his off hand
to infect his opponent with the shakes and slimy doom.
When possible, Edgar flanks the PCs, using the wolverine
for assistance.
If the battle turns against the siblings—if either one
takes at least 20 points of damage, for example, or if the
gloom golem is destroyed—Edgar casts swift expeditious
retreat and falls back to his grandfather’s vault. Katarin
casts misdirection and joins her brother; there, the two
make their final stand. Katarin casts blur on Edgar and
uses attack spells and scrolls to thin the party’s ranks.
While fighting, Edgar uses his touch as an off-hand
attack; if the PCs take his life, he wants to ensure that
they will take his contagion, too.
CONCLUSION
Once the PCs deal with the siblings, they are free to explore
the vaults. Each vault holds about 300 gp in assorted copper,
silver, and gold.
