refugees from besieged Qabalrin. Their resentment against
surface dwellers leads them to support Calais.
In Eberron, Tamesik was never a priestess of Lolth, but
instead worshiped the Mockery (as an aspect of Vulkoor).
Calais still worships Corellon Larethian, but he is a hero
honored by the Valenar in their warrior-ancestor religion,
not the head deity of the elves.
In opposition to the Valenar, Tamesik had been trying to
insinuate her drow into Khorvaire by creeping through the
upper levels of Khyber. Considering her people to be the
true heirs of elven power, she had hoped to build a base of
strength from which to exert greater influence. Her ambition
had been divinely inspired—a wave of hubris from Vulkoor.
Under the influence of Lolth, a minor demon lord, the scorpion
god has grown more prideful, filling his followers with
racial zeal. The new powers that Calais wields are partially
a manifestation of Vulkoor’s divinity and partially derived
from Lolth’s magic.
CALAIS ARCHWINTER IN FAERÛN
After their latest adventure, Calais and her band of heroes
were recuperating in Waterdeep when Rionan received a visit
from Myrnd Gundwynd, the leader of the Black Boar Tribe.
Myrnd passed along a rumor about a slave ring involving
House Gralhund, Anteos, and Rosznar.
Myrnd was unaware of the true depth of the situation.
Tamesik was running an illicit trade ring and trafficking
with three houses, but few people realized that drow were
behind the operation. When Calais and her party stumbled
into the warehouse, they were ambushed by dark elves.
Today, posing as Tamesik, Calais controls the trade ring
from the warehouse in the docks, using a secret tunnel to
Skullport to hide from the Watch. She is on good terms with
the slavers, mercenaries, and nobles from Gralhund, Anteos,
and Rosznar.
APPEARANCE AND BEHAVIOR
Tamesik was a common-looking drow female. Lacking the
bearing of a noble or the clout of a high priestess, she depended
on her intelligence, her thoroughness, and the loyalty of her
followers. She ran a tight organization but was not as cruel to
her subordinates as most drow priestesses are, allowing for
small indiscretions and occasional sloppiness.
In her youth, Tamesik’s body had a malnourished appearance.
When she began to rise above her roots, she made
a concerted effort to soften her features, cultivating the
appearance of a highborn drow. She tinted her dark, lustrous
hair with henna, bringing out the violet in her eyes. She used
garnet dust to highlight her eyes and a tincture of jet and
ivory to soften her skin and hide blemishes.
Tamesik watched the highborn priestesses, copying the
styles and cuts of their clothing. She favored high collars,
elaborate outfits, and expensive jewelry, always dressing in
fine garments even for simple meetings and procedures in
her sanctuary. Such trappings hid her relatively weak frame
and small stature.
Since assuming Tamesik’s form, Calais has had no trouble
keeping up the drow’s appearance. As an elf, Calais had always
enjoyed using cosmetics and scented oils. She has also taken
up Tamesik’s luxurious apartment in the complex below
the warehouse. When it comes to personality, though, she
occasionally falters. At first, Calais had to keep reminding
herself to react to situations with the cold cruelty of a drow,
not the warm compassion of an elf. She has grown more
comfortable in her role, but she still loses her composure
under stress now and then, lapsing into her old mannerisms
and speech patterns.
When in control, Calais is quiet, using succinct statements
and direct commands to get what she wants. When minions
address her, she responds tersely, with phrases such as “So
noted,” or “I will take that into account.” She is more talkative
with her two most important minions, a handsome drow
warlock named Darzemaan and a mysterious human wizard
named Kjarlo.
When in the throes of one of her fits, Calais becomes
more vocal: taunting her enemies, scolding her underlings,
and reveling in chaos. During these periods, she screams
puzzling statements about her true past, such as “Now you
know what it’s like, Tamesik!” or “This is for Pietro!” These
outbursts terrify and confuse her minions. They worry that
their mistress has gone mad, unable to differentiate past
from present or herself from others. Nevertheless, they still
support Calais, because they receive better treatment from
her than they would from other elite drow.
