his skills sharp.<br />

After a decade in captivity, he escaped for the final time.<br />

Not only did he manage to leave the fortress unseen, he<br />

made it as far as the border <strong>of</strong> his former homeland before<br />

he found himself unwilling to continue. He realized that<br />

he had left something important behind—he did not want<br />

to live in a world that did not include the fire giant queen<br />

and her daughter. Thaden turned around, infiltrated the fire<br />

giant kingdom, snuck back into the fortress, and returned<br />

to his cell.<br />

When Valbryn learned what had happened, she released<br />

him from captivity. Today, Thaden still spends some time<br />

in his unlocked cell, but he is no longer treated like a<br />

prisoner. He roams the fortress, <strong>of</strong>ten accompanied by<br />

his fleshraker animal companion—a 7-foot-tall dinosaur<br />

similar to a velociraptor. Thaden will defend or avenge<br />

Valbryn or Helthra to the death, motivated by his dedication<br />

to them both.<br />

Appearance and Behavior<br />

Although he is in late middle age, Thaden Felstorm has not<br />

lost his vitality. He stays healthy by sparring with the Urdred<br />

and teaching young fire giants how to protect themselves<br />

from giantslayers like him. His hair has long since turned<br />

gray, but his build is still powerful—in fact, living among<br />

giants has made Thaden a prodigy <strong>of</strong> strength (see the sidebar).<br />

He outfits himself in a mithral chain shirt and wields<br />

two giant-sized bastard swords.<br />

Thaden has developed a sense <strong>of</strong> humor about his place<br />

in the fire giant kingdom, and he is treated with attentive<br />

respect by his adopted compatriots. The fire giants that he<br />

trains live in fear <strong>of</strong> his ability to kill them outright, and he<br />

enjoys nothing more than embarrassing cocksure young<br />

giantlings in front <strong>of</strong> their peers.<br />

PRODIGY OF STRENGTH<br />

Thaden has lived among fire giants for much <strong>of</strong> his adult life.<br />

To survive in a world meant for much larger creatures—or to<br />

simply move from room to room—he was forced to open giant<br />

sized-doors, scale giant-sized stairs, and use giant-sized utensils.<br />

As such, he eventually became a prodigy <strong>of</strong> strength (see DMG2<br />

page 160), gaining a +2 bonus to his Strength score and a +4<br />

bonus on Strength-based checks, including ability checks and<br />

skill checks.<br />
