Cleveland Fire Department Operations Manual J. When the fire is knocked down, minimize the use of fire streams. This will help control water damage and the weight of the water on the floor. K. Upon entering an area which is very hot and finding no fire, withdraw immediately and check the area below. Advancing Attack Lines A. Advancing a 1 ¾ inch hand line inside a fire building shall be done by a minimum of two (2) persons. B. One person should be assigned to the nozzle, one to back up the nozzle man, and one outside to feed in or take up hose. C. The hand line should also have one (1) Officer, accompanied by an inside vent man. (This person may be a part of the Truck/Ladder Company.) Ventilation Shall be coordinated between the Engine and Truck/Ladder Companies. If an attack crew is short the inside vent man, the Engine crew will have to perform the task. Backup Lines A. Shall be used in conjunction with attack lines. B. Shall be put into position before an interior attack begins. C. Lines shall be positioned close to, and set up to cover the same area as, the initial attack lines. D. Lines are to be operated to protect the interior crew. E. Lines are not to be used for exposure coverage or to attack the fire at other positions if the interior crew is not covered or if both lines are required to control the fire from the same point. This would still require backup line (s). F. Lines should be at least fifty (50) feet longer and if possible one size larger than initial attack lines in order to provide greater reach and deliver more water. G. Backing up 1 ¾ inch lines: 1. Backup lines should be 1 ¾ inch with combination nozzles capable of supplying a solid stream. 2. One 2-½ inch line may be used as a backup line. Interior 2-½ inch line with fog nozzle should be backed by 1¾-inch line. 3. When 2-½ inch hand lines fail to control the fire, all personnel shall retreat and attack with heavy stream devices.
