Automatic Flight<br />

Takeoff Operation:<br />

Preflight: F/D switches are set to ON. LNAV and VNAV are<br />

armed. AFDS commands circa 8° pitch attitude (not for use<br />

with autopilot).<br />

Takeoff clearance: Pilot sets thrust levers to vertical position<br />

and checks engine parameters on EICAS. If parameters are<br />

normal, pilot pushes TO/GA switch which engages A/T in<br />

THR REF mode. A/T moves throttles to takeoff thrust limit.<br />

50 KIAS: TO/GA switch is inhibited until after liftoff.<br />

65 KIAS: A/T changes to HOLD mode to allow manual<br />

thrust control if necessary.<br />

100 KIAS: FMC stores the current barometric altitude as<br />

a runway elevation reference for later use re LNAV/VNAV<br />

engagement, flap acceleration and thrust reduction.<br />

Liftoff: AFDS starts commanding the<br />

roll to maintain runway track, and the<br />

pitch to maintain the airspeed that was<br />

recorded when pitch passed 2°, +10 kt;<br />

or V2+10 if that is greater.<br />

If current airspeed remains above<br />

target airspeed for 5 seconds: Target<br />

airspeed is reset to current airspeed,<br />

but not greater than V2+25.<br />

In case of<br />

engine failure:<br />

Target airspeed<br />

remains between<br />

V2 and V2+10.<br />

50 feet above runway elevation: Armed LNAV engages, and<br />

FMC starts commanding the roll to follow active FMC route.<br />

400 feet above runway elevation: Armed VNAV engages,<br />

and A/T changes to THR REF mode.<br />

Flap acceleration height: VNAV starts using a target speed<br />

of V2+100, but not less than 250 kt; and not greater than flap<br />

limit speed or airport speed restriction, whichever is lower.<br />

Thrust reduction point: (Above, below, or at flap acceleration<br />

height.) FMC activates armed climb thrust limit.<br />
