Many programs <strong>of</strong> educational assistance benefits are available to those who haveserved in the active military, naval or air service and to their dependents. Detailedinformation on all veterans‟ benefits can be obtained from <strong>of</strong>fices <strong>of</strong> the VeteransAdministrationThe standards <strong>of</strong> academic progress for students receiving educational benefits throughthe Veteran‟s Administration are as follows:1. Probation is defined as a period <strong>of</strong> time during which the student‟s progresswill be closely monitored by the Student Promotion Committee and the VicePresident for Student Affairs & Institutional Planning.2. The period <strong>of</strong> probation will be a maximum <strong>of</strong> three (3) consecutivesemesters.3. A student who is placed on probation for more than three (3) consecutivesemesters will be ineligible for certification <strong>of</strong> educational benefits throughthe Veterans Administration.Satisfactory Academic ProgressFederal regulations which govern the various federal financial aid programs stipulatethat in order for a student to continue to receive financial aid funding, he/she mustmaintain "Satisfactory Academic Progress" as defined by the institution. In thedefinition, the institution must establish a maximum time frame in which the studentmust earn the degree and divide the maximum time frame into increments not toexceed one academic year.The degree <strong>of</strong> Doctor <strong>of</strong> <strong>Osteopathic</strong> <strong>Medicine</strong> is granted to, and conferred upon,candidates who are <strong>of</strong> good moral character and who have satisfied all requirements asstated under Handbook Section on Graduation Requirements. A minimum <strong>of</strong> 45months must elapse between the date <strong>of</strong> matriculation and graduation. All degreerequirements, however, must be completed within six years following matriculation,(excluding approved leaves <strong>of</strong> absence).Any student who, at the end <strong>of</strong> the academic year, fails to maintain satisfactoryacademic progress is ineligible to receive financial aid, including student loans.Standards <strong>of</strong> Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) for Financial AidINTRODUCTIONFederal regulations require <strong>Touro</strong> <strong>University</strong> to establish standards <strong>of</strong> academicprogress for students who are the recipients <strong>of</strong> federal student aid. This policy defines“Satisfactory Academic Progress” in terms <strong>of</strong> the student‟s ability to continue to receivefederal student aid; the policy is related only to financial aid; this policy should not beconfused with other policies for academic probation and/or suspension.<strong>2011</strong> – <strong>2012</strong> COM Student Handbook
