APPENDIX A: CODE OF RESPONSIBILITIES AND RIGHTS OFTHE STUDENTS OF TOURO UNIVERSITY CALIFORNIA (TUC)The primary purpose of Touro University is the education of osteopathic physicians,pharmacists, allied health professionals, and teachers. The university is a community offaculty, administration and students. Each group exercises its own rights andresponsibilities in furthering the educational process of the University.The following code enumerates the rights and responsibilities of the student segment ofTUC. It is written in the belief that student knowledge of the student role in thiseducational process will promote more effective student achievement.This code and the accompanying bylaws are thus set forth to describe the generalpolicies relating to student life and organizations at TUC. These general policies aresubject to the bylaws and faculty policies of TUC.TitleThis code is entitled The Code of Responsibilities and Rights of the Students of TouroUniversity. It is approved and authorized by the Board of Trustees of Touro University.Definition and Basic ConceptsThe Code of Responsibilities and Rights of the Students of Touro University is a part ofeach student‟s educational commitment. The "university" refers to Touro University. The term includes the physical plant, thetotal educational program, students, faculty, employees, officers and trustees.A "student" is anyone who has matriculated at the university and has commencedclasses. The term does not include an individual who has applied for admission to buthas not been in attendance at the university, nor does it include alumni.The "faculty" constitutes those individuals appointed to the faculty by the President ofthe University.A "student organization" is any group of students given recognition by the StudentGovernment Association (SGA) administration.The "SGA" is the university student governance structure. The leadership of the SGA iselected by the entire student body. The SGA is composed of all the class officers andstudent organization officers. All students are invited to participate in SGA meetings."Student affairs" includes areas of student interest and involvement through which theiracademic, social and professional goals can be achieved."University affairs" are the academic, business, administrative, professional and publicrelations activities of the University."University programs" are those academic programs established by Touro Universityfor osteopathic medicine, pharmacy, allied health, and teacher education."Academic freedom" is the right of faculty and students to study, discuss, investigateand function within the educational process."Requirements of the University" are those prerequisites for receipt of the degrees,granted by the University, which are delineated in the college catalog and in officialpronouncements of the Board of Trustees, faculty and administration. Suchrequirements may change from time to time as need arises to insure acceptability andrespectability of the various degrees offered by the university.Student ResponsibilitiesTo achieve and maintain a high standard of academic, professional and social conductconsidering individual aptitude and abilities.To recognize the value and necessity for active and life-long learning as a vital adjunctto the university‟s formal educational program and to work diligently to learn fromtheir own strengths and weaknesses so as to become competent professionals who canlive up to the standards set by their chosen professional fields.2011 – 2012 COM Student Handbook
