Crowded examination conditions should be avoidedand alternate seating should be provided during examinations when possible. Inaddition, the administration should appoint adjudication committees consisting offaculty and students to deal promptly and with procedural fairness with cases ofalleged academic dishonesty. The faculty should clearly inform students of gradingrequirements and performance expectations for each assignment as well as useexamination formats that discourage academic misconduct.RESPONSIBILTY OF THE STUDENTTo be honest, act fairly towards others, take group and individual responsibility forhonorable behavior and know what constitutes academic dishonesty.CODE OF CONDUCT / PROFESSIONAL PROMISEStudents are expected to emulate the legal, moral and ethical standards expected ofprofessionals in their respective areas and display behavior which is consistent withthese qualities. Professionalism and professional ethics are terms that signify certainscholastic, interpersonal and behavioral expectations. Among the characteristicsincluded in this context are the knowledge, competence, demeanor, attitude,appearance, mannerisms, integrity, morals, etc. displayed by the students to teachers,peers, patients and colleagues in the other health care and educational settings.2011 – 2012 COM Student Handbook
CODE OF PROFESSIONAL ETHICS FOR FACULTY – TUCOMFrom the American Osteopathic Association Code of Ethics1. The physician shall keep in confidence whatever she/he may learn about apatient in the discharge of professional duties. The physician shall divulgeinformation only when required by law or when authorized by the patient.2. The physician shall give a candid account of the patient's condition to the patientor to those responsible for the patient's care.3. A physician-patient relationship must be founded on mutual trust, cooperation,and respect. The patient, therefore, must have complete freedom to chooseher/his physician. The physician must have complete freedom to choose patientswhom she/he will serve. However, the physician should not refuse to acceptpatients because of the patient's race, creed, color, sex, national origin ordisability. In emergencies, a physician should make her/his services available.4. A physician is never justified in abandoning a patient. The physician shall givedue notice to a patient or to those responsible for the patient's care when she/hewithdraws from the case so that another physician may be engaged.5. A physician shall practice in accordance with the body of systematized andscientific knowledge related to the healing arts. A physician shall maintaincompetence in such systematized and scientific knowledge through study andclinical applications.6. The osteopathic medical profession has an obligation to society to maintain itshigh standards and, therefore, to continuously regulate itself. A substantial partof such regulation is due to the efforts and influence of the recognized local, stateand national associations representing the osteopathic medical profession. Aphysician should maintain membership in and actively support such associationsand abide by their rules and regulations.7.
