The "university" refers to <strong>Touro</strong> <strong>University</strong>. The term includes the physical plant, thetotal educational program, students, faculty, employees, <strong>of</strong>ficers and trustees.A "student" is anyone who has matriculated at the university and has commencedclasses. The term does not include an individual who has applied for admission to buthas not been in attendance at the university, nor does it include alumni.The "faculty" constitutes those individuals appointed to the faculty by the President <strong>of</strong>the <strong>University</strong>.A "student organization" is any group <strong>of</strong> students given recognition by the StudentGovernment Association (SGA) administration.The "SGA" is the university student governance structure. The leadership <strong>of</strong> the SGA iselected by the entire student body. The SGA is composed <strong>of</strong> all the class <strong>of</strong>ficers andstudent organization <strong>of</strong>ficers. All students are invited to participate in SGA meetings."Student affairs" includes areas <strong>of</strong> student interest and involvement through which theiracademic, social and pr<strong>of</strong>essional goals can be achieved."<strong>University</strong> affairs" are the academic, business, administrative, pr<strong>of</strong>essional and publicrelations activities <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong>."<strong>University</strong> programs" are those academic programs established by <strong>Touro</strong> <strong>University</strong>for osteopathic medicine, pharmacy, allied health, and teacher education."Academic freedom" is the right <strong>of</strong> faculty and students to study, discuss, investigateand function within the educational process."Requirements <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong>" are those prerequisites for receipt <strong>of</strong> the degrees,granted by the <strong>University</strong>, which are delineated in the college catalog and in <strong>of</strong>ficialpronouncements <strong>of</strong> the Board <strong>of</strong> Trustees, faculty and administration. Suchrequirements may change from time to time as need arises to insure acceptability andrespectability <strong>of</strong> the various degrees <strong>of</strong>fered by the university.Student ResponsibilitiesTo achieve and maintain a high standard <strong>of</strong> academic, pr<strong>of</strong>essional and social conductconsidering individual aptitude and abilities.To recognize the value and necessity for active and life-long learning as a vital adjunctto the university‟s formal educational program and to work diligently to learn fromtheir own strengths and weaknesses so as to become competent pr<strong>of</strong>essionals who canlive up to the standards set by their chosen pr<strong>of</strong>essional fields.<strong>2011</strong> – <strong>2012</strong> COM Student Handbook
