Through research, collaboration, and application, the college seeks solutions to teaching, learning and behavioralissues facing America’s urban population. The College of Education offers the Master of Education, the Master ofScience, and the Doctor of Education degrees.The Master of Education is offered in the Department of Counseling. Educational Administration and Educational Supervisionare offered through the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy. The Master of Science degree is offered inHealth and in Human Performance through the Department of Health and Kinesiology. The Master of Education degree inCurriculum and Instruction and in Secondary Education are offered through the Department of Curriculum and Instruction.The Doctor of Education degree options in Counselor Education are offered in the Department of Counseling and EducationalLeadership options are offered in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy. The Doctor of Education inCurriculum and Instruction is offered through the Department of Curriculum and Instruction.MASTER’S DEGREE PROGRAMSCounselor EducationThe program of study leading to the Master of Education in Counseling is designed to prepare prospective counselors withthe tools and techniques essential for an understanding of the individual’s educational, vocational, health, and Social probl<strong>em</strong>s.The degree requires forty-eight (48) s<strong>em</strong>ester hours and includes a practicum in a school and/or Social agency setting.The student may elect to take additional course work and thereby become eligible to take the <strong>Texas</strong> State Board Examinationfor Licensed Professional Counselors.Educational AdministrationThe Master of Education in Educational Administration <strong>em</strong>phasizes the preparation of individuals for the role of administratorof el<strong>em</strong>entary and secondary schools. The program focuses on helping potential administrators become more humanisticin their approach to the solution of probl<strong>em</strong>s. Special attention is given to the decision-making process, and stressing theworth of the individuals who make up student groups, teaching staffs and school patrons.Educational SupervisionThe Master of Education in Educational Supervision <strong>em</strong>phasizes the preparation of individuals for the role of supervisionin el<strong>em</strong>entary and secondary schools. The program focuses on potential supervisors becoming more humanistic in theirapproach to the solution of probl<strong>em</strong>s. Special attention is given to the decision making process, and stressing the worth ofthe individuals who make up student groups, teaching staffs, and school patrons.Curriculum and InstructionThe Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction is offered at both the el<strong>em</strong>entary and secondary levels. The el<strong>em</strong>entaryoptions are Reading Education, Early Childhood Education, Special Education, and Bilingual Education.The choice of specializations at the secondary level is limited to areas currently taught in the secondary school. Some ofthose specialties include Art, English, Music, Math, Physical Education, Reading, Spanish, and Special Education.Credit in professional development courses taken at other institutions is not accepted toward degree requir<strong>em</strong>ents. However,in order to avoid duplication of previous work, a student may be ex<strong>em</strong>pted from some required courses by taking an examination.Ex<strong>em</strong>ption from the required course would require that a student enroll in a more advanced course to satisfy thecredit hour requir<strong>em</strong>ents of the program.112
