REQUIREMENTS FOR COMPLETION OF THE MASTER’S DEGREEMaster of Education Degree and/or The Professional Certificate1. Achieve unconditional admission status.2. File a degree plan or a professional certificate plan in the <strong>Graduate</strong> School Office.3. D<strong>em</strong>onstrate proficiency in English, either by examination or by passing the course, English 501.4. Be admitted to candidacy for the degree or for the professional certificate.5. Earn the required s<strong>em</strong>ester hours with at least a 3.0 average. (See departmental sections for s<strong>em</strong>ester hourrequir<strong>em</strong>ents.)6. Pass the comprehensive examination.7. Write a satisfactory thesis under Plan A, or complete 36 or 48 acceptable hours under Plan B (See departmentalrequir<strong>em</strong>ents.)8. Complete internship, if required.9. Apply for graduation.Detailed information pertaining to these requir<strong>em</strong>ents, along with other information of importance to the graduate student,is given later in this section of the bulletin.In addition to the above, students requesting a professional teacher’s certificate, the superintendent’s certificate, or otheradministrative certificates, will be required to achieve a satisfactory level of performance on an examination prescribed bythe State Board of Education.Master of Arts and Master of ScienceApplicants for the Master of Arts and Master of science degrees must meet the following requir<strong>em</strong>ents:1. Achieve unconditional admission status2. File a degree plan in the <strong>Graduate</strong> School Office3. D<strong>em</strong>onstrate proficiency in English, either by examination or by passing the course English 501.4. Pass the foreign language examination (if required).5. Apply for graduation.SPECIAL REQUIREMENTSFor special requir<strong>em</strong>ents for the Master of Business Administration, Master of City Planning and Master of Public Administration,see requir<strong>em</strong>ents in sections of this bulletin under programs in Business and Liberal Arts.ADVISORS AND DEGREE PLANAt the time of matriculation, the student will be assigned to a program advisor who will have general supervision of thestudent’s graduate work. The advisor will assist the student in filling out the Degree Plan, an approved copy of which mustbe filed in the <strong>Graduate</strong> Office by the end of the student’s first s<strong>em</strong>ester of matriculation at <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Southern</strong> <strong>University</strong>. Whena student enrolls for courses, his or her program must have the written approval of the advisor. The chairperson of thedepartment serves as the general advisor for students in the department and should be consulted prior to the submission ofthe degree plan to the <strong>Graduate</strong> School. The <strong>Graduate</strong> School also provides advisory services to students.Students who take courses without the approval of their advisors do so at their own risk and may not be permitted to includeth<strong>em</strong> in their degree or professional certificate plans.THESIS PROPOSALStudents whose degree plan include the preparation of a thesis must first prepare an acceptable thesis proposal. After thethesis proposal has been approved, the student can then begin work on the thesis.29
