To make students wise consumers of research and instill in th<strong>em</strong> the knowledge and skills required for continuingtheir professional career development.Master of Public AdministrationThe MPA Program has as its purpose the preparation of professionals for immediate upward mobility in professional careersin public sectors or for graduate study where the nature of the profession requires the master’s degree as the entry criterion.Its greatest single asset lies in its potential to alleviate the shortage of professionally educated persons, especially those fromminority groups, in local, state, national and international public service.The program is designed to prepare professionals to resolve the increasingly complex probl<strong>em</strong>s of managing urban growth.It is intended to respond to the increasing importance of planning and manag<strong>em</strong>ent as major instruments in improving anddeveloping solutions to probl<strong>em</strong>s of cities and metropolitan regions. The Program seeks to give students a balance inventoryof conceptual, quantitative and professional skills. To this end, the Program’s curricular philosophy is to:1. Educate students on analytical approaches to decision-making in th<strong>em</strong>anagerial sciences2. provide students with probl<strong>em</strong> solving skills and analyticalcompetencies that are relevant to manag<strong>em</strong>ent positions3. <strong>em</strong>phasize a knowledge of the workings of governmental and privateinstitutions4. develop the student’s ability to make use of acad<strong>em</strong>ic research5. provide a foundation in computer and information technology6. sharpen writing and oral communication skills7. <strong>em</strong>phasize knowledge of basic manag<strong>em</strong>ent processes and techniquesADMISSION CRITERIAWe are seeking highly motivated, high-achieving oriented students who have a strong interest in pursuing a public servicecareer. Prospective students must first apply for admission to the <strong>Graduate</strong> School (see the General Information Section ofthis bulletin). Applicants are then referred to the department for acceptance.In addition to meeting the general requir<strong>em</strong>ents for admission to the <strong>Graduate</strong> School, applicants for admission to graduatestanding in City Planning or Public Administration must submit:1. The graduate application form2. A typed essay of at least 250 words which states career objectives and gives reasons for desiringadmission to the program3. Three letters of recommendation4. Test scores from the GRE, and5. Two copies of official transcripts from each college and graduate institution attended.DEGREE REQUIREMENTSMaster of City PlanningThe overall requir<strong>em</strong>ents for the Master of City Planning are summarized below:1. Completion of a total of forty-eight (48) credit hours. Of the 48 credit hours, twenty-four (24) credit hours arerequired core course requir<strong>em</strong>ents, twelve (12) credit hours of specialization and electives, six (6) credit hours ofinternship, and six (6) credit hours of special probl<strong>em</strong>s.2. At the completion of twelve (12) hours of graduate credits, each student will prepare a degree plan in consultationwith his or her advisor. This plan of study should be drawn up and submitted for approval to the <strong>Graduate</strong> Schoolno later than the second s<strong>em</strong>ester in residence.93
