The graduate degreeis primarily intended to prepare students who will seek further advanced [e.g., Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)] degrees inspecific areas of research specialization in the Biological Sciences.The graduate (M.S.) degree program in the Department is also designed for those who wish to teach Biology in public andprivate schools, two and four-year colleges, and also for those who wish to seek <strong>em</strong>ployment in government and industryand related areas.ADMISSION CRITERIAIn addition to meeting the general requir<strong>em</strong>ents for admission to the <strong>Graduate</strong> School, applicants for unconditional admissionmust have a Bachelor’s degree in Biology, preferably with an undergraduate grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 4-point syst<strong>em</strong>, and expected to present evidence of having completed minimally the following courses and/or credit hours:Biology …………………..31 (minimum)Ch<strong>em</strong>istry…………………16Math<strong>em</strong>atics………………10Physics……………………..8Those applicants who fail to satisfy the course requir<strong>em</strong>ents for admission may register, upon the permission of the Chairpersonof the Department, as graduate students and take a combined program of undergraduate and graduate courses untilthe above-noted requir<strong>em</strong>ents are met.42DEGREE REQUIREMENTSMaster of Science in Biology1. An examination on the fundamentals of biology before admission to candidacy.2. D<strong>em</strong>onstration of proficiency in English, prior to admission to candidacy either by passing an examination inEnglish or by satisfactory performance in English 501.3. D<strong>em</strong>onstration by examination, of a reading proficiency in a foreign language (French, Spanish or German) priorto admission to candidacy or by passing Computer Science (CS 117).4. A minimum of 30 s<strong>em</strong>ester credit hours, six of which might be earned in research.
