…………………………………………………………….Ch<strong>em</strong>istry…………………………………………………………….The Department of Ch<strong>em</strong>istry offers the Master of Science in Ch<strong>em</strong>istry. It is designed to:1. Prepare students for additional study toward the Ph.D. degree.2. Prepare well-trained ch<strong>em</strong>ists for positions in industry and governmental agencies.3. Provide continuing education for working ch<strong>em</strong>ists.4. Provide upper-level service courses to public school and junior college teachers seeking either a professionalcertificate or the M.Ed. degree for teachers of ch<strong>em</strong>istry offered through the College of Education.ADMISSION CRITERIAIn addition to the general requir<strong>em</strong>ents for admission to the <strong>Graduate</strong> School (see the General Information Section of thisbulletin), applicants for admission to graduate standing in Ch<strong>em</strong>istry are expected to present evidence of having completedthe following courses with the indicated s<strong>em</strong>ester credit hours:• General inorganic ch<strong>em</strong>istry with laboratory (8)• General organic ch<strong>em</strong>istry with laboratory (8)• Quantitative analysis with laboratory (4)• El<strong>em</strong>entary physical ch<strong>em</strong>istry with laboratory (8)• Instrumental methods of analysis (3)• College physics (6)• Differential and integral calculus (6)A diagnostic examination or Qualifying Examination covering the fundamentals of ch<strong>em</strong>istry is required of all applicantsprior to official admission to candidacy for the Master of Science in Ch<strong>em</strong>istry degree. Only two att<strong>em</strong>pts to pass thisexamination are permitted.DEGREE REQUIREMENTSMaster of Science in Ch<strong>em</strong>istryThe requir<strong>em</strong>ents for the Master of Science in Ch<strong>em</strong>istry are summarized below:1. Satisfactory performance on the qualifying examination.2. Completion of a total of thirty (30) s<strong>em</strong>ester credit hours of graduate level courses (usually 500 level orabove). A minimum of twenty-four (24) of these credit hours must be in Ch<strong>em</strong>istry, including six (6) hoursof research (CHEM 861 taken twice). The r<strong>em</strong>aining six (6) hours may be taken in related disciplines suchas Biology and/or Math<strong>em</strong>atics.3. Completion and presentation (through an oral defense) of a thesis to a committee composed of m<strong>em</strong>bers ofthe Department of Ch<strong>em</strong>istry and representatives of the <strong>Graduate</strong> School.4. Fulfillment of general requir<strong>em</strong>ents for graduation as outlined by the <strong>Graduate</strong> School (see the GeneralInformation Section of this bulletin).Persons wishing to acquire the Professional Certificate for Teachers of Ch<strong>em</strong>istry or wishing to earn the M.Ed. forTeachers of Ch<strong>em</strong>istry should contact an advisor in the College of Education.CURRICULUM SUMMARYMaster of Science in Ch<strong>em</strong>istryDEGREE PLANStudents must meet the general requir<strong>em</strong>ents for all graduate students as prescribed in this bulletin. Degree Plans must beapproved by the graduate program advisor prior to submission to the <strong>Graduate</strong> School.46
