ADMISSION CRITERIAIn addition to the general requir<strong>em</strong>ents for admission to the <strong>Graduate</strong> School (see the General Information section of thiscatalog), applicants for admission to the M.A. program in History are expected to have completed an undergraduate majoror minor in history or a related discipline. Students who do not meet this criteria may be required to enroll in undergraduatehistory courses before they are fully admitted to the program. All application materials should be submitted to the <strong>Texas</strong><strong>Southern</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>Graduate</strong> School. The Department Chair or the <strong>Graduate</strong> Student Advisor will review all applicationsand make recommendations to the Dean of the <strong>Graduate</strong> School.1. Degree requir<strong>em</strong>ents for a M.A. in history:DEGREE REQUIREMENTSA. Thesis option: Complete thirty (30) s<strong>em</strong>ester hours of graduate work (fifteen (15) s<strong>em</strong>ester credit hours of requiredcourses; fifteen (15) s<strong>em</strong>ester credit hours of electives) with a grade point average of at least 3.0; d<strong>em</strong>onstrate competencyin functional English; pass a comprehensive examination over course work in History; write and defend asatisfactory thesis in U.S. history.B. Students will undertake an independent research project leading to the productionof an article length senior thesis.HIST 430 TOPICS IN HISTORY (3) Intensive study with reading and discussion of special topics in U.S., AfricanAmerican, and World History. Special attention will be focused on selected national and international topics. Three hoursof lecture per week.HIST 434 TOPICS IN LATIN AMERICA HISTORY (3) A general study of the origins of the peoples, cultures, andpolitics of Hispanic America with special <strong>em</strong>phasis on the probl<strong>em</strong>s of colonialism, imperialism, and h<strong>em</strong>ispheric solidarity.
